Incapacity Benefit - Anything else?

Hi

I am posting this on behalf of my brother. He was been off work since August 2011 due to poor health. Had surgery Nov 2011 and then again last week. He will hopefully return to full health (and work) in a few weeks. However, his employer informed him that his SSP would cease next week and told him to start claiming incapacity benefit.

He has looked into this and is entitled to £50 per week??? Is there anything else he can claim? Or can anyone point me in the right direction to find this information out?

Thanks in advance

If he is a tenant, he can get housing benefit and the Direct Gov website will show the Local Housing Allowance rate. He might be eligible for council tax discount. Put his details into the Turn2us online benefit calculator.

    Hi

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately as he still lives with my parents he wouldn't be entitled to these but will def check out the website.

    Thanks again

Nobody can make a new claim for IB.
All new claims are for employment and support allowance.

    Hi

Thanks for all this great advice.

I have had a look at the various websites and it is ESA he will be getting at £50 per week. Because he is only 21 and still lives with my parents it looks like this is all that he can get :-(

The sooner he is on the mend the better.

    Thanks again

In all honesty, even £50 a week is not too bad if he lives with parents, if for a short time he gives parents £25 a week to cover
food and utilities, he would still have £25 a week 'pocket money'

There are thousands of people on here who wish they had an extra £25 to call their own.

    Hope he recovers soon.

It's around the same amount as he would get on JSA. It's intended to cover his share of the food, council tax and utilities with a little over for personal expenses.

What else were you expecting benefits to cover if he has no rent to pay?

    What do you mean 'how'

He takes it out of his pocket and gives it to his mum to pay for the food he would eat.

If there are 3 of them in the house and say £60/£70 was paid for the family food, for a week it would be a reasonable share with a few more pounds towards the electricity he would use.

obviously your mum hasn't told you how much food and utilities cost these days
