Yes.

If you fail in your claim, you make a complaint to the insurer. After eight weeks it can't satisfy you, so you escalate the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Is this what happened?

They are regulated by the FSA.

So this was a claim, rather than a complaint?

Have not yet reached the 8 week period of the complaints process to be investigated.

So referring back to my comment in post #4, you appear to be in this stage;-

The recognised complaint route means you should allow the insurer an opportunity to investigate and to reach a final conclusion which it should communicate to you within 8 weeks.

and will move into this stage if no satisfactory outcome has been reached;-

At that point, if you remain unsatisfied, you have the right to escalate the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service for resolution.

Most referrals get you to a psychologist.

Since around 1999 I've never heard of one that doesn't have such a clause.

It's very common but there are 2 to my knowledge that will payout from GP sick note. Both only available via brokers - not direct.
