Butlins big weekends on the cheap?

I got a leaflet through a few weeks ago for Butlins big weekends and there is one my H really wants to go to but its expensive. I've seen caravans to hire at Butlins but wondered if you can still attend the events on at Butlins even if you dont book through them? The one we were looking at was at Minehead and Butlins was only offering us apartment accommodation so I wasn't sure if that and the caravan park were 2 separate parks?

As I understand it, Butlins don't own the caravans, only independent persons who rent them out privately. You stay at the same park, and have a park pass which you need to access the facilities. When I went that was arranged by the caravan owner and collected from Butlins' reception along with the caravan keys.

The above is correct for Butlins Minehead. There is a Butlins Caravan Village complex located within the Butlins resort. There is a mixture of caravans and some lodges located around a lake e.g. http://www.holidaybutlins.com
The village is about a 10 walk from the main complex where the events happen. Most events are included with the rental price of your accommodation however for some events like WWE, Madness or Peter Andre the caravan owners have to pay extra for those tickets as they are called Arena events and are run by the respective event organiser instead of Butlins, so most owners offer their accommodation and then add the cost of tickets on top or ask the renter to organise getting the tickets.
You check-in as you would with Butlins at their reception who handle the distribution of the caravan keys as well as deal with any problems a caravan or lodge may have.
Once inside for Big Weekend events many things are free like the funfair and the Big Weekend events, which Big Weekend are you planning to go to?
