To Tick Or Not To Tick

Morning all.
I've raised this in a thread elsewhere but wonder if anyone has a specific answer to this or advice if it applies.
Like thousands of others, if I cannot remember whether a particular application was 'pre-ticked' for PPI, what is the best approach ? If the company come back and say, you applied for it and here's a copy of the ticked box, tough, is it worth asking them whether the box was 'pre-ticked' back in the day ?
The obvious problem is that even if I didn't need PPI, if the online box was ticked and as such, no mis-selling has taken place, presumably it's my word against theirs. Has anyone had any success challenging the tick box situation ? Is a 'pre-ticked' PPI box enough grounds for a complaint ?
Thanks in advance.

Who was it with? I know Egg pre ticked boxes, but not sure during which period. I've never had an Egg card so can't be more specific, sorry!0

Thanks, yes, it was Egg, I took out the card in 2005.
I've come across a few other threads which suggest that Egg did have 'pre-ticked' boxes in the past and possibly applications that wouldn't let you proceed unless the box was ticked in certain circumstances. I guess I'll send their response to the FOS with a covering letter and let them follow it through. I could try again with Egg but suspect this will only delay the matter by another couple of months and I still might end up down ther FOS route.0 -

Can i ask how you managed to get in contact with the correct complaints team? As the Egg site hasn't got the recommended route to complain. What it Egg you complained to or Barclay card as they have now taken over their creidt card business?
Thank you

wee chcken - just the usual reason, didn't want nor need it.
rob - in my case the account was closed whilst still with Egg so I initally approached them for info. Egg replied saying that all business had been passed to Barclaycard. Barclaycard agreed but then said they couldn't find me (not surprisingly as the account wasn't open anymore) so I ended up going back to Egg and they are dealing with my claim.0
