First plus offer for ppi

LIke a similar poster we took out a barclays loan in 2008 for £15,000 with ppi on top of that. we were told it would be like a savings scheme as we would get cash back in 5 years time as the ppi only covered us for that time.
today have received an offer for the £1409 that we have paid to date in ppi and the 8% per annum simple interest.
the ppi policy and interest combined is worth 4788 and we can have this taken off our outstanding balance (although we wouldnt then get our £1409 back as this would be included in the 4788).
Anyway, i know we have options, but i had actually been expecting to get about £3500 back next year from the ppi cashback! in some ways i'd rather they gave me the 4788 for the ppi so that i can pay some other stuff off and keep our loan payment at the amount it is already at if that makes sense.
anybody had experience of this? would i be better waiting to get my cashback deal next year and then try claiming ppi?? am thinking of phoning them up to ask
any advice greatly appreciated
