Cheap Frozen Mince

Hi

I use a lot of mince when cooking, but not in huge amounts so I figure it is easier to get frozen rather than buying packs and only using half/a third and having to freeze/chuck the rest.

My question is does anyone have any advice where to get decent cheap frozen mince from? I've tried Tesco's frozen (not the market value) but that has little chunks of what I assume is bone in it, which makes the meal crunchy... So I was wondering if anyone has found anything better?

Farm foods sells 2 packs (1.5kg) for £5/6 i think, was debating trying that next...

Not sure about frozen but my local butcher sells 5kg of fresh mince at a rate much cheaper than the standard price per kilo. Take it home, split it into portions (about 250g works for me but however you like) bung in freezer, jobs a good'un. Only takes 5 minutes. I've never found it any cheaper in the supermarkets unless it's reduced to clear.

crunchy? really?!! that sounds vile. Im not a fan of mince but the family like spag bol/lasagne, I just use a cheaper lean fat mince and add beans & lentils, etc and stretch it out. Yuk, crunchy lol!!
Which meals do you cook with it?
  • mostly i make mince mixed with chopped tomatoes and rice. Got the idea from romanian style stuffed peppers, but as I never have peppers in I just did extra rice and it is really nice. Dead quick/cheap meal and fills u up as well. but i also use it for things like spag bol and other bits and bobs.
and yeh, the crunchy wasn't the most pleasant experience ever, hence why I'm trying to find better haha.
I'm trying to live out of the freezer more for meals as there are only 2 of us in the house so when I buy fresh stuff I either have to go nuts with it and use it every day, or it goes out of date haha. Went in farm foods near me the other day and went nuts (and was amazed at how good the quality was).

Cheap mince has just got more fat in it, so as soon as you fry it off it all comes out. On the other hand if you like fat add lard. That'll make it go further....

Although less convenient, You may be better buying fresh mince and freezing it in small portions and take out what you need from that.
Fresh mince is usually finer, can be leaner and if you get it from ALDI, cheaper.
We have a discount meat place near us that sells 4k mince for £6. So I bag it up and freeze it and take out what I need.
NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!
  • I need to find one of these discount meat places ha.
