Renewing insurance with current insurer as a new customer

First time post so hello!

Here's the story:

My insurance renewal is due with Elephant. I pre-empted this a few weeks back and got some quotes with them as a new customer.

My best was £480 for the year, £500 less than what I paid last year.

My renewal has just come through and they're offering £800 for the year. Quite obvious which one I'd rather have isn't it!

My question is can I cancel my renewal, then start a new policy with them through the website in order to get the cheaper price?

Does anyone have any experience with doing this?

Cheers

Phone them. I did this with Churchill. The confused.com quote was lower than their renewal. I just phoned them up and asked for the lower price, or I'd cancel the policy. They agreed to the lower price.

yes, it is perfectly acceptable, I have done it with Ebike a few times. Just make sure you tell them you are not accepting their renewal to make sure they don't try the old auto renew ploy.

Our car insurance came up for renewal and Tesco wanted £320 fully comprehensive. I went on confused.com and Tesco came out at £260.00. I checked with Tesco and they said I could accept the lower offer as a new customer.
  • Yes it's always a good idea to check a quote out as a new customer with your existing insurer.

GF did this last week, wascharged 328 last year and wanted 358 renewal. We questioned this increased amount as just moved to a 'less risk' postcode, and was told everywhere has gone up.

Did a new quote and came out at 208, then checked quidco and insurer currently offering 80 cashback, so new policy with existing insurer worked out at 128 after cashback compared to the 358 they wanted.

  • Most renewals have to be acted on. A friend was telling me how his mother in law never checks and just pays, so there's s percentage who don't care!

Just call them to see what they can offer but be savvy and smart by shopping around

Just ring them up and say you want the cheaper price and they do it for you straight away. Make sure you have the code for it from the site where you got the cheaper price and they just amend it. I have done this with Elephant/Admiral for the last three years.

My parents didnt have any luck with SAGA, Their renewal was quite a jump from the previous year. Sneakily the website knew they were customers and wouldnt do a quote.

A few tweaks on the name and it let us do a quote, Quite a bit cheaper. Phoned to complain and they basically said tuff luck, Thats an offer for new customers. Obviously we couldnt even try wih the new quote as the name was wrong.

    They just went elsewhere.

Dont some companies specifically say not for existing customers though?
