V5c left with dealer!

Options
Hi all,

I have a quick query which i hope someone can help with. I have just sold my car to a used car dealer but he insisted on posting the V5c yellow bit himself, says he does it all the time same day as sale.

Now I am beginnning to regret not being forceful about doing it myelf. If i send a letter to the DVLA informing of the sale with a copy of the sales reciept will that suffice, or do i have to keep my fingers crossed that the dealer sends it off??

Thanks in advance

Greg

Don't worry it's all fine. You should have been given a little green slip from the V5. Your new document takes about 10 days to come through with all your details on it.

Was this a properly set up dealer or a street corner with a handful of cars? Sounds like an unlicenced chancer who will be busy with the tippex to pretend to the next buyer he is selling it privately for an emigrating family friend. If your worried, do as you say and you've covered yourself.

Should be fine as dealers I've dealt with have done the same thing, however if you don't hear anything soon a letter to the DVLA saying you sold the car to the dealer and haven't had a letter saying you don't own it any more will also work.

Some motor traders dont want dvla to know the vehicle has been through there hands, the slip maybe filled in with a different name / address, its how some traders dodge the system, its quite easy for the tax man etc to check number of vehicles been through so and sos hands, DVLA records won’t be complete until the new keeper tells DVLA in writing. Until they do, the police may need to contact you if they have to make enquiries about the vehicle. so your best bet is to write a letter to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR giving the:
    • vehicle registration mark
    • make and model
    • exact date of sale
    • name and address of the new keeper

its more a problem with part time motor traders and when they cant sell the thing they think they can fool the proper motor trader into a deal for it but it never works because theyve slapped the tyre black on like its out of fashion, hastily pulled the for sale sticker out of the side window but left the sticky tape and pushed all the rubbish under the seats

i normally offer £200 if its a big lump then before i weigh it in for profit i haves the battery and the cat and the change left in the ashtray by the proper former keeper that wayne forgot to get:D

you buy a car for £1295 with part ex from screen price of £1495.
trader makes £300 on the part ex when he sold it (know the guy who bought it).

less than 12 mionths down the line, and 2k added to mileage of 110k, had new brakes discs pads allround, new exhaust from cat back new injector seals, full professional valet Mop polish waxing cleaned inside everywhere, due mot passes with no advisories all new tyres.

your curcumstances change your off to america for a fresh new start a new life, you give first dibs of the car to the trader you bought it from, without desclosing you reasons.

the trader then offers £200 cash, would you get peeved off? what would your thought and responses be at this?

i am not in this situation but i have bought a car from the same trader he's a local trusted trader that been running for 15+ years, i have sent people looking for cars from him and people have bought form him after being sent there by me, my friend has also done the same and had this response when offering to sell back the car.

what would your responses be guys??

i know what i would tell him!

    So that was you?

As the seller, it is your duty to send it off, otherwise it could remain in your name and speeding and parking tickets pop through your door.

I would not have let them take it. It might be what he normally gets away with, but it's not right.

You send it off so there's no come back to you - that's the whole point of it. Trust no one.
