Where can I buy attractive pine trees?
Hello all
I'm fascinated by pine trees, particularly those you see in the Mediterreanean and Balkans such as the Macedonian pine.
I find all the garden centres around me tend to sell the same old species such as Scots pine, White pine, Korean Abies (nice but very common) and then all the Leylandi type coniferous species.
I see growing around about here, dense light green pines which look like the Macedonian pine to me (Pinus Pinea).
I cannot seem to find anywhere that sell these more unusual types, apart from in seed form, or as tiny 10cm saplings.
I'd like something about 6ft (now) with that southern European 'hot sandy' pine forest feel.

Have you tried the RHS plant finder? It gives locations of nurseries, although you would need to work out exactly what you are looking for :-)

I had a bit of a google, because i do not know much about pine trees, but something at the back of my mind was reminding me i knew pinus picea.
Pinus picea is actuallu the stone pine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Pine. It is beautiful.
The macedonian pine in pinus peuce http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinus_peuce and to me at least rather ordnary!
The other thing to considerin choice conrad is th eventual size of aome of these v the size of your garden and proximityof neighbours.
I wonder of you have considered something like larch trees, which can have an almost etherial lightness http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larch?
To evoke medittereanian heat, columnar cypress trees might be worth a shot (in fact i am considering bringing some tall ones over i to the country myself to solve a difficult garden issue, and bring them in ina friends van is cheaper for me)0
