Booking flights long in advance - is it cheaper?

Quick one - father in law wants to fly over from California to the UK around end August - brief glance at the web suggests we might hope to get flights at around $730 (dollars) for him currently. Is this likely to change soon, or do prices stay fairly constant up til a few weeks in advance? I assumed the latter but he is a little anxious :)

Thanks in advance

Generally the lowest price fare classes will be sold first, as time goes on running up to the flight (especially at busy times) the prices will increase as the more expensive/flexible fare buckets are the only ones left. $730 isn't bad for that time of the year.

we booked for our family of 4 from UK to LA for a holiday this coming August. We booked at the end of September last year, on the day we could actually start booking (you can't book over 11 months in advance) and paid £404 each return. Within 3 weeks the price had actually doubled. By the New Year the price for the same flights was around £700 each and hasn't altered since.

You never really know what's happening, or when offers may come up, but i do think the earlier you commit, the best price you get. it's a bit of a lottery really and you might just have to take a chance that you are getting the best price for what you are buying.

in his favour is that he is a lone passenger, so there might be a deal later on for a single seat, rather than trying to fit a family in. depends how much he wants to travel and if he is flexible nearer the time. $730 does seem a decent price though given the length of the journey and all the taxes etc.
