Advantages of purchasing with Credit Card over debit card

Hi, can someone tell what the official line is on the advantages of purchasing with a credit card rather than a debit card? I've heard and seen lots of conflicting information. Are all purchases with credit card insured by the issuing bank? Some say its depends on the type of credit card, some say its only for purchases over £100? Some point out that it depends on what you are purchasing (goods/flights)? Is there a limit to the amount that is covered? Thanks in advance.
