Untrustworthy Call???

I received a call last week from a company claiming to be government runned and they were able to give me alot of information including their registered number etc. I was cautious from the outset though.

They said as a government agency they have been given names and numbers of those who have been mis-sold PPI - while I can understand this to a point I am concerned about how they got my details in the first place as I have never had a credit card or loan and so I am sure I have never been offered PPI never mind been mis-sold it!

Has anyone else experienced this? Should I be concerned? And if so should I report them?

  • It sounds similar to the ones I get saying they know how much I'm entitled to from my accident or they can guarantee me a loan for x amount. I'm not sure where they got my number from (although it started after doing a few price comparisons) but I'd guess it was a scam artist hoping to get lucky.

Google the information they gave you and see what comes up.

What you describe is a classic scam and of the type that the FOS, MoJ and OFT have posted warnings about a number of times.

1 - there is no list of mis-sold PPI people.
2 - there is no government agency involved.
3 - your data is not in the public domain.

I'm an IFA and I have had these scam calls telling me I was mis-sold. Yet I sort my own insurances (and dont have PPI). They are just trying to scam people into paying an upfront fee.

If you get the company name, then report them to the ministry of justice. Otherwise never ever ever deal with cold calling companies.

thanks all Im so glad you confirmed my thoughts! I didn't get the name of the company but I got a load of other details including the guys name (im guessing this might not be his real name though) and they even quoted the ministry of justice! I wrote all the details on an envelope so I will check out the details online - I just hope other people don't give in so easy to them as I imagine many will - they were so convincing only I knew PPI would never have applied to me!

  • I'm sure lots of people will be taken in by them, just be glad you're not one of them.

I got inundated with calls recently, so stopped answering my phone to numbers I don't recognise. If you google the number afterwards, you can often see when it's a scam company, and you can save it in your phone to ignore again. I have three numbers saved under PPI scam, and I get calls most days.
