I have a massive collection of photos, mainly of my three children.
I have often painstakingly gone through them all to scan and make photobooks for special occasions.
I have made one each for the kids of our family cat after she died. I went through every album finding pictures of each child with the cat and also ones of my cat only, so they ended up with a different photobook each.
I also got my brother to 'secretly' find some old albums my mum had so I could make a Photobook for their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Then my brother's wife contacted me to ask if I could scan and send her all pics I had of him from the age of 0 - 30 (she had what she wanted after 30) so she could make a book for his 40th
One of my daughters is now living in Australia, so when she came back to UK for a couple of weeks I had made her one of mainly pics of her and me from babyhood upwards, calling it 'My Mum and Me.......she of course burst into tears when she opened it.
The scanning of photos, going through every album, uploading and designing a book, is very time-consuming, but worth it once done.
I also have taken stacks of 'home video' with a camcorder since 1988, again, mainly of the children growing up, but lots of other members of the family. Obviously these were all transferred to VHS, but are all now on DVD's.
Funnily enough I have only just got round to making another three copies of each DVD, yes, you've guessed it, one set each for the kids.
I spent all day yesterday transferring to my DVD hard drive, bits and pieces then transferring to DVD's. Then printing all the covers I have made to insert into DVD cases.
I still have loads more to do before the sets are complete.
Luckily, my partner has got 17 of these DVD's on his PC hard drive, so he burnt one set of 17 for me, which is a great help.
I very rarely get the camcorder out now, as I tend to use my iPod Touch and upload videos to Photobucket....like getting each member of the family to do a quick Xmas message to my daughter in OZ, all with a Santa hat on and uploaded to Photobucket. I then sent her the link to the album on Xmas Day.
Anyway, sorry for the long post.
Just got carried away lol0 -
Family photos certainly need to be looked after to preserve the memories.
My Dad is a photographer and after his diagnosis he finished organising all the family photos and I got three memory sticks handed to me last week - over 17,000 family photos, some even dating back to the late 1800's which he found when researching the family tree. (Luckily those ones have names on them!)
OH on the other hand, his mum has a box with random (really bad - headless etc) photos in it. I have seen 3 photos of OH as a child aged 3, 8 and 12 - I've never seen a picture of him as a baby, and neither has he

Sorry for your loss.......my Dad passed away in October last year and it's only this week that I've had the strength to go through all the family photo albums.
There's something quite comforting about leafing through 'proper' books of photos whilst you're curled up on the sofa with your memories."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -

I know what you mean about building up to going through stuff - best wishes with that.
You're right, it's not the same looking at digital stuff on a screen - don't really know why. Perhaps because the older photos have a look and feel of age?
Until I started this I didn't realise how much of our memories do fade away - these photos have been really helpful to me and looking back through them has reminded me of things I'd long since forgotten and some that have made me laugh out loud.
I'm now going to take more photos of people I love rather than rely on my memory or wait for a 'special event' - I'm glad mum did. Now everyone can groan at me when I get my camera out.
