Not going to mention the store as I'm sure most of them are the same, but couldnt believe the amount of add ons I was offered today when buying a bed.
Chose a bed for spare room at £269
Before I left store, this is what I had been "offered":
Delivery -- £27
Drawers -- £50 EACH
Headboard -- £89 - £129
Insurance -- £25
Mattress Protector -- £19
Old bed disposal -- £40
Pillows £12 upwards
Assembly by delivery driver --£10
She got me for the delivery charge, and eventually threw in the 10 year guarantee (insurance) for free.
If 10% of people are "talked" into these extras, its obvious where the profit comes from, and why the base prices can be so low.
So, had to pay a total of £296 inc del, but could have so easily ended up at £500+
When I got home phoned council, as I thought entitled to 2 "bulk" collections per year free, but told this stopped 3 years ago, and charge now £17.50. (still better than the £40). Declined and took a heavy duty hammer to the old one, and rolled the mattress up tight to fit on back seat of car.

If you were to start a business selling beds would it be your goal to sell as little as possible?0

In a way its better if you don't want the extras because it makes it a bit cheaper....annoying if you expected everything to come with it, but not everyone expects to have their bed insured and the old one collected!
Yeah my council only charges 10 pound for each thing now and it gets collected in under 10 days unlike the old 3 week wait so not too bad.[FONT=georgia, bookman old style, palatino linotype, book antiqua, palatino, trebuchet ms, helvetica, garamond, sans-serif, arial, verdana, avante garde, century gothic, comic sans ms, times, times new roman, serif]A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it

My pet hate is the pushing of extende warranties on appliances. I have NEVER taken out such insurance with the exception of my first laptop - an inspired choice as that was the only device of mine that has ever needed repairing and that was one month before the extended warranty expired.
Other than that, I have saved myself many hundreds of pounds by refusing these fleecing proposals. Usually if an appliance breaks down it does so within the first year, which is covered my the manufacturer anyway.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
It's a very common marketing technique. Sometimes referred to as up-selling or the 'open wallet' tactic i.e the customer has their wallet open ready to buy so what else can we sell them now?
And the most successful up-selling campaign in history?

Another way to get rid of old furniture is either charity or advertise free to collect .That way it doesn't go to waste, handy if you are not good with an axe!!:rotfl: :rotfl:
