uneven plaster/wall

hoping you can help with a quick and cheap way to fix this

theres a strip of 10cm across and 148cm down at the side of my fridge that looks like

seems as if theres been tiles as can see and feel them beyond the fridge and 1 strip has been removed - the wall is uneven so couldnt be easy to just put tiles on so i was thinking of getting something like

all i really want to do is smooth out that part and be able to paint over it (or maybe even tile at a later date)

would it work or any other quick/cheap solutions?

Unless its been tiled very very badly I would say that that hasn't been tiled directly. It looks more like an extremely poor attempt to cover something else up with the type of product that you linked to.

I reckon it will all come off if you re careful then you can reassess the problem.

If you stick another layer of stuff over the top of it all you will do is reduce the size of the room further than it has been already!! Until you remove the fridge you won't have any idea how far back it goes and you'll probably end up with a ½" step in your wall.

If its only a temporary fix I'd be tempted to suggest you just whack a coat of paint over it and live with it as is until you can chop it off and start again.

    Cheers.

That wall has had tiles hacked off and no proper attempt has been made to deal with the remaining adhesive and the finish plaster which has come away with the tiles.
If you want a decent finish there is no point trying to go over the existing with skim.
The surface needs to be prepared by chopping off the adhesive ( or you could try 60 or 80 grit sandpaper ,easier if you can get hold of a belt sander) . You could then apply some plaster and if necessary sand that down to get a better appearance.
    Forgotten but not gone.
