I'm going to Cape Town on holiday (first one in 4 years, yippee) in May and will be taking my digital SLR (Canon 10D). I have 3 lenses at present, a 50 mm prime, 28-135 mm zoom and 100 mm macro. What I'm missing is a decent wide angle lens and a telephoto. I'm prepared to buy one of them (preferably a Canon lens), for the trip but can't seem to choose between them. Yes, I'll want to take panoramic shots as well as wild animal shots in the bush.
Any recommendations please? I'd love the 17-40 mm EF but it's a lot of money. The minimum telephoto I'd like is at least 300 mm given the 1.6 sensor multiplier over film (for want of better words). Again, you could spend a fortune if you dared.
And, just to prove to I'm a moneysaver at heart, does anyone have any suggestions for sourcing lenses at good prices? I'll be checking out Jessops and WarehouseExpress at Quidco if they're there, but if anyone has any other suggestions I'd be interested.
Thanks

Don't have a digital SLR (yet..), but quite impressed with Sigma 24mm and 400mm lenses. Wide angle wouldn't be given the multiplier, but the 400 (aka 640mm) could be worth a look. Note that these were manual focus lenses, late 80s early 90s.0

Yeah if you want close up photos, then go for a telephoto and I've never had a problem with sigma. You can get some very good deals on ebay, recently got a 70-200 f2.8 for something like £260 !!
I would get a longer lens for the wild animal shots and your 28-135 should be ok for most landscape shots at the wider end.
Good luck and enjoy it - don't spend all your time behind the camera!!!!0 -
Hi Sulumar - can't speak for the telephoto side but if you're after a decent wide angle lens, can I suggest saving money by going down the 3rd party lens route: I can recommend the sigma 10-20mm and the tamron 17-50mm f.2.8; I would do some research regarding sigma as I was reading comment about another sigma lens I have my eye on, the 50-150mm f2.8, to the effect that it had front focus problems on canon bodies.
The sigma was purchased by finding the cheapest price on froogle and then e-mailing jessops to see if they would pricematch (they did). The Tamron was bought through onestopdigital.
The following site is useful for prices:

Thanks folks, looks like the telephoto wins then. Now to choose which one.0
