they used to cash cheques to the value of a cheque guarantee card so if you card was £100 you wrote the cheque for £100 and they would give you £80.00 and not cash the cheque for up to 30 days otherwise known as a payday loan0

When I worked for Abbey about ten years ago we used to be able to put through Inland Revenue warrants as 'cleared items' instead of cheques if the customer asked nicely and they were known to branch staff.0
