Getting a dog - rescue or puppy?

That was my initial plan! I emailed them for some advice and they said to visit the dogs home when we're ready to rehome a dog and to take my son along too so they can see how him and the dogs get along. There's a couple of other shelters near me (Tameside, who I've dealt with before and had problems so prob won't be going there! and Millstream) so should have quite a bit of choice
There's also the Tameside and Glossop RSPCA, they board their dogs at MyPetStop just off the M60 in Denton.0

The whippety girly dog's details were posted up in mid February I think, so still possibly a good chance she's there. Worth contacting the rescue if you like the look of her. She's with http://www.walkerscreekrescue.co.uk/page3.htm in Cambridgeshire.
Bit of a drive from Manchester perhaps, but for the right dog I'd also be prepared to travel.
My own rescue dog (who doesn't look too disimilar from her!) I found through the Dogpages site that also been mentioned on here - he was originally from a shelter in Herefordshire, had been rehomed to a family way over in Hertfordshire the year before - but they decided to emigrate and didn't want to take him too, so contacted the rescue to take him back, but as the poor wee fella hadn't done too well in the kennel environment they asked if he could be rehomed direct from them, so the family travelled up to the midlands where I was living at the time. So I didn't actually have to drive anywhere but he didn't come from a local rescue either.0

How have you managed the travelling if you don't mind me asking? I do drive but don't have a car at the moment but I suppose I could always borrow my parents car for the day...
For the dog (rescue from Wales) we travelled by train, bus and taxi to meet her and see if she was the one for us. We had a homecheck done beforehand.
She then came on a transport run arranged by rescue volunteers and we met her with some friends half way on the journey.
With one of our cats that came from Liverpool, we went and stayed with some friends in Crewe (travelled by train again), went to see her (already been homechecked again) and love at first sight. We took her with us, stayed at our friends for a day before travelling back on the train down South, she was fab and didn't mind at all.0
