I find Scottish Power, Ovo and Ebico to be the cheapest (£500 a year user). But Ebico don't do any fixed periods. Ovo fix their price for a year and have standing charges. Scottish Power, well I spent ages looking through all their tariff PDFs and working out the cheapest one. I just switched to the May 2013 no standing charge fix. It was the same price as Ovo but I was already with Scottish Power anyway.

A comp site will do that for you in seconds though...

As a low user you should be aiming to spend less than £600 a year. If you spend £599 you will not get any discount at all. Depending on the timing of the bills you are taking quite a big risk as it could come in at under £600 this year then next year be a bit more than £600. Also, if the consecutive direct debit payments are not made you also lose the discount.

It seems that people have different ideas to what constitutes a low user.

According to Ebico I am a low user (and Scottish Power) https://www.ebico.org.uk/products-and-prices/rates-and-prices

Thanks for those who have helped.

However, as some of you just seem to want to belittle other posters, I won't be coming back to this thread.

If that comment was directed at me, I was pointing out how much time you could save by using a comp site instead of poring over endless tariff charts. How is that 'belittling'?

I didn't feel belittled... I used a comparison site as well. But I wanted to find the prices on the website and Scottish Power seem to refer to the same deals using different names whenever they feel like it so I had to look through everything and check which was which.

It is a pity that you feel that way as you have had a range of sound advice, free of charge, from experienced posters. As well as trying to offer sound advice I always post for the benefit of others.

For the benefit of others it is irrelevant whether an individual considers their consumption to be low or not. A Consumer Focus accredited comparison site ranks all tariffs of all suppliers (except those for "unwilling" suppliers who have withdrawn tariffs from comparison) taking into account the annual consumption provided. Some tariffs and discount structures work to the advantage of low or very low consumption and the comparison site calculation is tailored to the exact annual consumption provided.
