£2000.......which MPV?....if at all!

I am going to have £2k max to buy a car and am thinking of getting a MPV as opposed to the mondeo estate I did have. I have 2 small children and a double pushchair so need decent boot space.
Options seem to be Renault scenic, vauxhaul zafira, citroen picasso, nissan almera fino? Any suggestions or would I be better getting an estate like focus etc?
Also, petrol or diesel? Will use car for 20 mile round trip to work and general short trips.

Thank you in advance
Not as silly as I was thanks to MSE:)

I’d go for a Mondeo Estate/early C-Max. Fuel type isn’t that important, however for what you describe, remember to red line a diesel once a week to clear the engine out.

You should get more for your money with a petrol, however, and watch the early TDCi engines (although anything post-05 we’ve not had a problem with). I don’t know about petrol, as nothing fleet-wise does less than about 40k/year!

None of those will have decent boot space..... Stick with the Mundano size cars. For as popular as they are, I can't see any practical reason to buy an MPV.

Petrol all the way, old diesels are often expensive to run/repair and certainly negate any fuel savings you make.

The advantage of an MPV is to save your back and save banging your head when getting small children in and out of the car. Plus old people find it easier to get in and out. However I agree there are many disadvantages.

We drive a scenic and it does the job with two small children. However boot is'nt massive so use a roof box for holidays etc.
  • My grandparents have a Picasso, and while I can't stand Citroens it does sound like it would meet your needs.
  • reanualt grande scenic has better boot space then the megane scenic avoid 2003-06 petrols the horrible dephaser engine 1.9 or 2.2 dci is the one you should look at.

    toyota previa??

    focus c-max estate.

2002-2004 54 facelift rover 75-MG ZT deisel estate (known as the 75/ZT tourer).

I’ve got the S-Max which offers the best of both worlds. I think with cars it’s really down to personal choice rather than recommendation, though.

Have a look at the 2000-2001 Honda Shuttle 2.3 Es with vtec engine. Best car I ever owned. They are getting on a bit but just read what owners say. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/honda/shuttleodyssey-1995/?section=good

The boot on the Zafira, with the third row of seats folded, is pretty big. The C-Max boot is also big.

What is your basis for older diesels running costs when compared to petrol cars?

  • For that kind of budget a seat alhambra or toyota hilux derivative can be had.
