Ubuntu Task Bar

I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 and now my task bar is at the top of the screen. All the usual icons (shutdown, speakers, clock etc)are on the right hand side. But if I hover over the left side of the task bar the File, Edit, View, Tools etc. are there.

Is there a way to get the task bar back to the lower part of the screen, but keep File, Edit, View, Tools etc at the top where they usually are?

Using Firefox as my browser.

Thanks for any help/advice.

  • I found the Firefox preference box, but I can't see the 'view menu bar' only Startup, Downloads and Add-ons in the General tab.

Can you give me a bit more info?

    Thanks.

I don't think it's the Firefox settings that need changing, but the desktop. However, IIRC both Gnome Classic desktop and Unity have the desktop taskbar at the top of the screen.

There are other desktops available that have the taskbar at the bottom though.
  • Do you know how I can get one of these other desktops with the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen?

    Thanks

Two desktops which have their taskbar at the bottom are LXDE (as used by Lubuntu) and KDE (as used by Kubuntu).

You don't need to reinstall to get them - simply follow the easily found guides such as this one:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LXDE

You can then switch between desktops just by logging out and choosing a different one when you log in.
