Joint Student Account For Me and Partner

Options
Hi all,

I am yet to find a student bank account anywhere which advertises that it can be joint.

Me and my partner are going to Uni in September and are planning to live together whilst there (renting privately). To make it easier for rent, bills etc. we thought it would be a good idea to have all the money in one account.

Can anyone suggest which student account would be best to use and that IS available to be opened by 2 people.

Thanks,

AidanJ :)

  • i don't think any student accounts allow two people to share the account. in general, the best advice about shared living at uni is to put different bills in different names rather than sharing accounts and linking credit records. since this is your partner rather than a group of people you may not know well, a shared account may be more appropriate. if you do go round this route, get separate student accounts (and therefore separate overdrafts) and have a basic bank account that you share for paying bills and rent.

I thought that might be the case.

You won't get a joint student account. I and my fiancee did a similar thing to you - we had a normal joint account for bills and shared money etc, which we both paid into, then had separate student accounts (well, I did, she wasn't a uni student at the time and just had a normal account but I digress...)

It makes sense to have two separate accounts as you'll then get two interest-free overdrafts.

However, make sure you don't get the account with the same people! I have a student account with Natwest and we have a joint account also, I put a small overdraft on it for £250 (emergencies, bills going out unexpected etc) and when I tried to up my student account overdraft was informed I could not because of the overdraft and breaking the t&cs...

Be clever (unlike me) seperate banks! And remember you are financially tied so make sure you use the overdraft wisely (as it is unlikely to be 0%!)
There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well...
