Don't look at a car if it's been raining or just had a wash as it hides a lot of nicks and dents.
Get someone to start the car from cold and look at the exhaust for white/blue smoke.
Take it on a good test run including the motorway. Insist on a brand new MOT.
If your gut feeling is it's not right then don't buy. Plenty more about.0 -

Correct.
However I wouldnt be buying from a garage in the first place that is trying to blag out of their obligations.Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.
Got a huge Buzz out of it.0 -
Yep, this garage is trying tell you that you're buying 'sold as seen' or 'straight sale' like a trader selling to a trader - inspect the car, buy the car, walk away, no warranty, and therefore cheaper. NO comeback.
But you're not a trader you're a consumer, if you do want to buy from him (and I wouldn't if he's trying to waive your rights for you), THEN you should make clear that you are a customer and not a trader and that you expect the car to be fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality, and last a reasonable time, as the Sale of Goods Act states. He'll want more money than for a straight sale, and more again if you're lumbering him with a trade in, but that's the price a consumer pays for these dealer services. I think he's implying that he has literally just taken the car in and hasn't turned it around or serviced it or anything, which means if you want to buy it you'd have to check thoroughly, and get it cheap.0 -
Last one I bought this way was sold as spares or repair.
No warranty.
It was a runner, came with just over two months mot, and now passed with £100 of work.0 -

the OP caris doesnt give full details so it is quite possible this p/x they want to buy is out the back somewhere and the sellers probably dont want to toothcomb the thing because they know things that need mending will outweigh the point in selling it
it wouldnt be car of the week because its a specific offence to sell a dangerous car
its probably got issues like faulty aircon,cd jumps gearbox snicks in 2nd occasionally so for some people they would be happy to take it with all these minor ailments because they can see them rather than go to the auction and buy blind, lets be honest OP is obviouisly buying above their station anyway because they are buying a banger but want a warranty to cover all ills
as i said earlier they really need to go bug a private seller
unfortunately i have a cracking picture of a private sellers car i discretely photographed today and quite frankly the seller wants a boot up the jacksie for what he did in the way of a bodge
but enough ramblings from me...................:D0 -
dealers can't escape SOG responsibilities by writing "trade sale" or similar on receipts to consumers and to even attempt to do so I think is criminal offence.
put some of the cost on a credit card if you are worried about the dealer going bust/out of business, actually it's worth doing that whether you are worried or not0 -

There's a right way and wrong way to sell a p/x they just want shot of though.
I've got to be honest, mine was a bargain, as the spares or repair put others off, but it covered them to shift it on, and I was happy to accept I was driving it away and wouldn't be going back.0
