I want to fit retractable window grilles after some scumbag broke into an elderly neighbour's home on Sunday and twice tried to get into mine later that evening.
All the places I've seen online are v expensive esp for installation. I've seen some on ebay which are quite cheap but I don't know if they are as good as the more expensive ones or if I could save money and try to install them myself.

I'd be grateful for any ideas / advice
I know they aren't attractive but I want them for peace of mind esp since the robbers didn't seem bothered that we were at home at the time.
Thanks

Hi, obviously the more expensive will be better quality then the one sold via EB. That said, I did look and, they look not too bad for the price. If you are capable to install yourself, then do it and make a big saving, they don't look that difficult to install.
I made a security gate for my rear door, fancy spider web effect style, did the fitting too of course.
What I did and, what you are thinking of doing is to make it as difficult as possible for the scummies to break in, a grill is enough to make them think twice, your giving them more hassle. A determined scummie would get round my device if he wanted too. Same applies to alarm systems, not the first time I viewed a bell box oozing expanding foam!!
HTH and, the police catch the pond life.

alarms and grills will help, but will only put off the chav scumbags. not the real pros.
they will look for easier targets.
another option is to get a dog. our old jack russell used to eat chavs for breakfast.Get some gorm.0 -
Most break-ins are by opportunists so anything you can do to put them off and go next door will help. I don't think the grills need to be super-strong. They're not unsightly, not as if it's a wrought iron gate.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Thanks folks, I'm on a tight budget so a visable deterrant is what I want. An expensive alarm system might be ignored by neighbours. Think I'll try one of the grilles to see what it's like and get a handy man in to fit it. If it looks the business and isn't too diff' I'll get more. Also, some motion sensor lights too (Argos / Screwfix). Welda, you're right I want to give them as much hassle as poss so they go elsewhere.
Sadly a dog isn't an option... otherwise I'd get a rottie!
thanks again0
