Las Vegas/Los Angeles & Orlando

Thanks for all the advice - certainly something to think about!! As a couple of people have pointed out - school holidays = mega bucks. I always do DIY holidays to Orlando, but a multi destination trip seems much harder - a lot more to consider. I keep looking at the calendar to try to see if I can move dates outside of school holidays. If I can talk DS out of going to Glastonbury, I may be able to squeeze in a trip end June beginning of July which seems quite a bit cheaper.
It's giving me a headache thinking of all the options!!

The best part of 2 days to drive 270 miles from LA to LV? It took us like 4 hours and we saw more (not only the desert).
I don't think there would be much in it. If you are in the best position before leaving (staying at LAX) you probably would have a hire car to leave back first. If you don't you have to travel to the airport anyway. Allow 30 mins. Coupled with say an hour check-in before you fly, your 50 minute flight then say 45 minutes from when you land to you getting all your luggage then getting a taxi to your hotel, longer if you hire a car at LAS I make that about 3-4 hours from journey start to start. If your plane is delayed.............
£108 for 2 adults return is £216 for 4 adults return in mpet's case. You could hire a fullsize car for 7 days for £162 and keep it in petrol(gas) as it's so cheap compared to here.
Anyways that my 2c worth. At the end of the day you've gotta weigh up all the options.0 -
jnd
we're both right and wrong.
I was pricing the trip if it was for 2 x travellers only, you're absolutely right about the cost going up if you had 4 passengers.
My thing for the time related goes as follows - taxi time from hotel to car hire, say 1/2 hour, time in car hire pick up say 1/2 hour (if you're lucky), time to clear Los Angeles area 1/2 hour (if lucky), time to travel 270 miles through the desert 5 hours (more if you stop for a break, time to find your hotel 15 - 30 minutes, which comes to 6.5 to 6.75 hours, which is the BEST part of a day
it would take you to do the journey by car EACH way - which is where i got my 2 days driving through the boring desert from.
Obviously, if you already had the car / carrying on with the car you would save a lot of time at either end.
You pays your money / you takes your choice !
Either way you'll have a good time.
MTC
p.s. if you do decide to drive, make sure that your mileage is unlimited and that your car hire company lets you take the car out of state (most do, but it's worth a check)0 -
Haven't looked around for specifics, but we flew last year from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, and through looking around and taking our time, we found flights for just £20 each inc taxes!
This would be just £80 for all 4 of you, and well worth considering. Of course, it all depends what deals are around at the moment.....0 -
I have put a similar post on another thread looking for Florida car hire. The gist of the post was that the Americans have money off vouchers on virtually all of their sites.
Go to Google and type in "las Vegas vouchers" and get access to any amount of
coupons enabling you to get in to places free or at reduced prices.Reduced meals.
Try las vegas car hire coupons.
"Orlando coupons" for greatly reduced entry to Disney,Universal Studios, free hotel rooms for kids, hotel rooms for $29 etc etc
If flying with US airlines, try United Airlines coupons...experiment,use your imagination, have a rummage around and save money.

Without getting off-subject most of these coupons are little more than gimmicks.
For instance I will bet you a virtual pint that you cannot show any "greatly reduced entry" prices to Disney and Universal Studios. A couple of percent maybe.0 -
I think,Cardew, that over here we are conditioned to vouchers taking 2p off a jar of coffee and the like. Not so in the States.
Usual Entrance to Disney is $42 per person and Universal is $53 per person. With the
vouchers it is $40 for four people.I'm not great on percentages, but I think the claim "greatly reduced"is justified. https://www.saveorlando.com0 -
I think generally that, although there are discount tickets available to buy before you go, it is cheaper to buy them when you're there. Most tourist hotels sell the entrance tickets at reduced prices.
When we wanted to go to SeaWorld, it was actually cheaper to buy a 2 day pass (we only wanted to go for one day) from the hotel, than to buy a 1 day standard ticket from SeaWorld!0 -
Another ha'peth.
In the years bi (before internet) you could get low fares from consolidators who were good at arranging round trip and open jaw tickets as well as straight return journeys.
So I've been UK/Chicago/Vancouver with stopover in Chicago on way out (for a meeting) and direct flight back for less than UK/Chicago fare! Have also had a good deal out to West Coast and back from Denver, ie open jaw.
These types of ticket don't seem easy to find on the internet. They can give US internal flights (effectively) for free BUT they only apply with a US transatlantic carrier which flies the internal sectors (or has a partner airline which does).
Unfortunately with internet booking don't know if consolidators are still in business but it may be worth trying to find one to check costs.
Enjoy your holiday.Nice to save.0 -

Tonys,
I live part time in Florida.
I will double my virtual bet and tell you that there is absolutely no way you can get into Disney or Universal for $10 with a 'free' voucher.
Investigate that site and just see what is involved. Sure if you go on a $3,000 world cruise you may get a voucher(I am being facetious - but you get my drift).
There are specialists forums on Florida where prices of tickets for all the attractions is discussed endlessly. It is very rare that you can get more than a couple of Dollars off a day ticket for Disney/Universal.
Take me up on my challenge - if you can get $10 tickets you will make yourself a fortune and get 2 virtual pints!! And I will have to eat humble pie.0
