11 Months of no Claims

Hi all,
I wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help me with some suggestions - I'm between a rock and a hard place!
Just bought a nice new car, and didn't really consider my insurance renewal date. As it turns out, I'm 11 months into a 12 month policy that I have paid in advance (on my old car). I still own the car, and plan to give it to my mum, who is a named driver, so she can use the last month of my insurance.
My question is regarding NCB. Technically I will 'earn' my NCB, on 1st April, but I need to insure my new car from next week. The difference between no NCB and 1 year is £600! So i have 3 and a bit weeks of a gap beforehand. It's unlikely that any insurer will honour 11 months no claims, but i can't get temporary insurance to fill the gap due to my age and penalty points :-(
The only options I can see is to insure with no NCB, and throw money away (perhaps update later), or wait until 1st April to drive my new car. I get 7 days temporary insurance from the dealer, so i could drive for a week then go back to my old banger I guess :-(
Anyone have any suggestions?
I can't really take any risks with regard to insurance - my penalty points were for driving without insurance - picking up the current banger from the seller and getting caught on the way home, doh! Lesson learnt!
Cheers!

Swop the new car onto the old policy until renewal...problem solved0

Yup, do what dacouch said, or failing that take out a 1 month layup policy on the new car to protect against fire/theft/vandalism.0

Use the 7 days free then transfer your policy to the new car. Either scrap/sell the old one or get your mother to insure it0 -
I dont think you can transfer the no claims over once the policy has been taken out. So either put off buying the new car for a few weeks or get rid of the old one and transfer cover to the new car then find the cheapest quote on the new one. With 1 years no claims.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Another option would be to go for a short term insurance, and use that to insure the new car for the next month until your renewal comes up. Then use your 1 years NCD on the new car.0
-
Another (cheaper) way - take out policy, cancel during 14 days allowed for cooling off, then repeat. Then your "old" policy will have ended.
Paying 2 admin charges will be less than short term cover.
(Downside would be if you had a claim during this period!!)0 -
Ask the dealer if you can pick up the car 2 or 3 weeks later, offering him £100 or so storage charge (cash). If they are not pushed for space I doubt they'll mind as it doesn't really cost them anything to store it for you for a short while.''apply within''0

Surprised the dealer is even letting the OP drive away without proof of insurance, but I guess that's why so many of them do 7 days free insurance these days.
If the dealer is seeming to actually be helpful, maybe ask them how much that insurance costs and how much they'd want to extend it to 21 days?
My first option would still be just to transfer the old policy onto the new car for the final few weeks, however.0 -

I doubt an extension would be possible - its a special 7 day driveaway product offered by Aviva.
I think the OP will just have to wait 3 weeks after his 7 days to drive the car.
I did that for a week or two when I bought my first car - got the 7 days driveaway then waited until my year as a named driver ended on my mother's car - then Admiral agreed to give me that as a years NCD.0 -
Simple solution: Swap the new car onto your existing policy, take a temp policy out on the old car with same insurer (Admiral/elephant have always been more than happy to do this for me at a reasonable pro-rata rate), then cancel the temp policy once your mum has it.
You won't lose any no-claims, your policy will still expire at the same time, and no car goes uninsured.0
