PPI Claim by phone?

HI,
I've read a good few threads and a few people have said they made a claim by simply calling their bank. Does anyone else advise this or should i request an SAR and then make a claim. I've had at least 4 loans in the last few years, is it best if i file a claim for each loan, they're all with RBS. There's so much info on here i don't know what to do for the best.
If i can claim by phone, which number do i need to call?
