Halifax (HBOS) Shares still viable?

While clearing out I came across a letter from Halifax (dated 1997) that I had an entitlement to some shares that came from the merger back in 1997. From all the information I've been able to find the shares are no longer claimable (as of August 2010) but I was wondering if anyone had any other experience with this.
Many Thanks

I believe if you dont claim shares they sell and keep the money on your behalf. Eventually its donated to charity, you better check with Halifax themselves0
