Changing from Acuvue to Acuvue moist

Hi,

I want to buy a new batch of lenses online. I currently use Acuvue, but they do get dry quite quickly, so I was considering switching to the "moist" ones. Before I commit myself to £50 worth of lenses can anyone advise me if they've had any problems with them that means I would be better trialling them via an optician?

any advice is much appreciated.

I haven't tried them yet, but intend to soon. I, too, am on the normal Acuvue lenses and get the same problem with them drying out.

But spotted the advert on TV and there is a free trial voucher available from their site.

  • Thanks. I saw this too and had a look at the website. I thought they would post you a pair, but it turns out they send you a voucher which you have to take to an optician and pay the consult fees etc.

The opticians I used to use before I moved gave you free lenses to try anyway, so maybe I should stick with what I know and next time I get a check up express and interest and see if I can get a pair
  • I too suffer from dry eyes and irritation upon wearing lenses. I tried the Acuvue Moist lenses from my local optician and they are great. I looked online and the cheapest I could get was £16 for 30 lenses. My local specsavers was selling these for £17 for 30 lenses.
Does anyone know of any other make/model of lenses that are suited to dry eyes that may be a bit cheaper?
If I had the spare dosh I'd definately use Acuvue Moist; they were very good - but a bit too pricey for me.
    :)

Personally I would definitely advise seeing an optician.

They do many checks to make sure the lenses aren't causing any problems to your eyes.
Personally I wouldn't consider trialling these myself.
Surely your eyes are worth the "bother" of going to get them checked properly.

Not all problems may be easily apparent to you.

Because of dry eyes I'm not allowed to use lenses, but have to keep my eyes lubricated with drops.
At first I was prescribed standard drops with preservative, but these hurt my eyes, and now have a preservative-free (and expensive, but these are on prescription) version.
I'd be inclined to trial through an optician, just in case the lubricant used by Acuvue gives you problems.

I use the moiset ones - and they are far better then the others. My eyes used to get quite dry with the other contacts but not as much now. But after wearing them for 6 hours plus i still need to rewet them - i just use the normal rewetting fluid bottles you get from boots etc.

but i do think you should get a few trail pairs from your op.they will give them to you free.

I can highly recomend Hydron Actifresh range. I can wear for a good 12-13 hours before encountering problems, I use them with the Optifresh solution. Works a treat!
  • As an Optometrist I have experimented with most lenses claiming to help with dry eyes. Acuvue moist are very good but expensive, Ciba dailies now have PVA added to keep them moist but not everyone is happy to have a chemical leaching out of their lenses throughout the day.

For a monthly lens you could try Proclear but I have never really been impressed and have recently started using Extreme H2o by Cantor and Nissel. These are not widely available but the results I have had have been very impressive and they are not that expensive - We charge £18 pm including solutions and aftercare.

If You want an in eye re-wetting drop try Blink - ensure you buy the one in the green box which contain sodium hyaluronate (also found naturally in the eye) - approx £4.50 for a box of 20.
  • Hi,

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

Thanks Lisyloo. I didn't explain myself very well. I am planning on getting regular checks as I am prone to problems anyway. As I've not worn lenses for a while I wanted to wear them for a few weeks before my first appointment. I wasn't sure how much of a gamble it was to buy the moist ones when I'd not used them at all in case the general consensus was they were troublesome

Big thanks to everyone here - I've got lots to check out and all cheaper than the £21.50 quoted by my optician (not including the check-ups) I'll have to see if he'll give me a few trial pairs of the ones that look the most promising.
  • Just saw this post on the freebie thread (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=383901 )- Edna_Bucket has a great find which may help you!
