You are right, it is absolutely ridiculous. It isn't your bank's job to pay off your creditors whether you want them to or not, it's their job to dispose of your money in the way you tell them to do so.
I can only suggest you stop wasting your time with incompetents and go straight to a complaint.
To the effect they have ignored your instructions to stop paying out your money, wrongly advised you as to current banking regulations, and so have made unauthorised payments; and claiming back from them all money they wrongly paid out.
REMIND US WHICH BANK IT IS SO WE CAN ALL AVOID OPENING ACCOUNTS THERE.
A wretched excuse for a bank, completely and utterly useless. Open an account elsewhere meantime, your last phone call should be to ask for the address of their Complaints Department.0 -
From experience, if PDUK try to take a payment from an account without enough funds, it bounces and they call you up, send a text to tell you to call them, then start hassling. I'd delete the overdraft to the current limit (£70 I think you said). If the bank allows an unauthorised overdraft, then I'd put in a further complaint on top of the complaint for incompetence. If their going against FSA guidelines, then you can report that to the FSA. They have to act fairly, your bank blatantly aren't. Hi Purplerain.
I just saw your thread. Have you quoted Santander's own terms and conditions at them? This subject was covered in one of their recent t&c updates:
You can cancel a continuing payment authority on a debit card at any time but must notify us before the end of the working day before the next payment is due.
Here's the link:

Very best of luck with sorting everything out.0 -
Thank you so much for the link to Santanders terms and conditions stating that i CAN cancel a continuous payment i have just quoted them back to themselves via secure messaging on online banking!
Thanks again for the advice re the other companies i am trying to reduce the OD via online banking but it keeps refusing me so i will have to make yet another call to telephone banking i think
On the plus side i had my telephone counselling session with CCCS on wed evening and i am entering a DMP in April with them so i will have most of it hopefully under control by then in the mean time i am still going to dispute any payments my bank allows to pass through that cause me un necessary OD charges.
It will just be a relief to pay these things off and in future i am steering well clear of any type of loan!0 -
hi Purplerain - did you get a reply from Santander?0

If you've read anything about a face cream scam that seems to be fairly widespread, it seems like lots of banks are saying that you can't stop payments being taken. My colleague was lucky as her bank (Co-Op) sorted it pretty immediately, but it sounds like that's rare.0

Ah, Santander; something which I do know a thing or two about, having worked there.
Closing Santander accounts that have had an overdraft recently is an absolute nightmare; even for the staff to be honest, because of the way the charging system works for interest and such. Fastest way is to do it in branch because usually the system (now) finalises it right there and then, sometimes some types of charges cause problems though.
I would suggest you need to ask them to completely remove the card from your account - this should be possible regardless of anything else currently pending - not just block it, or cancel it, completely close the card. AFAIK this will prevent any recurring payment authority from continuing (just blocking or cancelling doesn't always accomplish this).Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
sorry to jump in and =slightly= changed topic but has anyone seen/read the news the govt are FINALLY stepping in to review these companies? hooray! of course it's my fault for getting into the mess i'm in, but piling on debts by astronomical means isn't helping this current financial crisis we're all in when we want to pay it off in the first place!
hope you get it sorted though buddy, got similar issues my end.0 -
Hi Guys,
I havent had a reply yet from the bank no
thanks for the advice Re the santander account whilst i was on telephone banking the other week the advisor asked if i wanted my card stopping (i said yes) is this the same as what you were refering to? I'm so confused with the whle thing now i dont know if im coming or going!!!
I did hear they are finally investigating these companies yes! its about time i know we made the decision to take these out in the first place but peoples circumstances change and its unfortunately all too easy to spiral into a trap very very quickly.
I'm expecting more hassle next week when quickquid and txtloan go in for their money cant wait for my DMP to start!0 -
Hi, I will try and keep this really short. I have about 5 payday loans and have deferred again this month. I have spoken to National debt line regarding what to do. I have spoken to my bank twice, firstly to ask them what i can do about cancelling CPA's and asked them what they can do they said they will cancel my debit card and send a new one and this will stop them being able to take the money. They cancelled my debit card. I phoned again to check this would prevent money coming out tomorrow and leaving me with no money at all... I was told by someone else at the bank, having had cancelled by debit card wont help at all. I contacted several of the PDL companies today asking if I could reduce the deferral amount (due tomorrow) and I was told NO! I spoke to my bank again and notified them I want to stop the CPA and can they help. They told me they couldn't do anything at all.
I feel totally sick and haven'slept for the past couple days and I am expecting my whole salary to be gone tomorrow even though I have a new debit card.
Can someone please, please tell me which of the above is correct. I have had two different answers from different representatives at the same bank!!! Will they still get the money even though the bank have cancelled my debit card???0
