Tenancy agreement for living with parents?

Options
I know this may sound like a random question, but is it possible to get a tenancy agreement when paying rent to parents?

I've been accepted at university recently ( :T ) but in order to receive the NHS bursary, i need to send proof that i pay rent, in the form of a tenancy agreement.

I live with my parents though, and just have a direct debit set up to my mum every week.

Is there any sort of document available in this case? It's not really for legal purposes, as i'm not really a "tenant", but not sure what options i have, short of writing a letter to state that i pay a regular amount to parents?

Any ideas/suggestions welcome.

Kind regards

Mrs B xxxxx

But you don't pay rent, you pay board and lodge.

    You are not a tenant.

Give them a ring and ask them what else you can give them

Is the bursary dependant on whether you are a tenant or not.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I believe you will be classed as an 'at home independent student' and will receive a ilttle less than if you were living in rented accommodation.

However, this information may be out of date so ring the help line to clarify.
  • I don't think it will affect the application at all, but i will call them to clarify what i can send.
When stating my annual estimated income and outgoings for next year, i included rent (which is what we call it), which is why it assumed i was a tenant, presumably.

    Thanks for your help! xxxx

An " independent" student is one who has supported themselves financially for 3 years, has a child, is married or in a civil partnership, is permanently estranged from parents ( clearly not in the OP's case) etc.

OP - as McKneff says, just give them a call to clarify your situation. Did you tick a box on a bursary form that said "pays rent" rather than one that says "living in parental home"?

    pmlindyloo is correct.

If you are living with your folks, you get less money.

If you try to persuade them this is a rental, you will get done for fraud and risk being kicked out of the profession.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

That part is correct, the "independent" classification is not unless OP meets the relevant criteria (which she has now confirmed).:)
  • Sorry for any confusion.

tbs64: I ticked the box to say i'll be living at home, with parents. I am classed as an independent because i am a lone parent.

The reason it's cropped up is because it asked for annual expenses etc., so it can work out a means- tested bursary. I'm not trying to get more money by saying I'm a tenant, as I've already stated i live at home. I just didn't know what to send to prove that i pay every week, though as McKneff has said; it's board and lodge.

Phone lines open at 8am tomorrow, so will give them a ring then!

    Thanks again x

Thanks for the clarification - as you'd not said in your OP that you did meet the criteria for an independent student classification, I had wrongly assumed that you didn't.

Maybe they need to redraft their forms to more clearly take into account a wider variety of personal situations - many who will be living with parents will be making an appropriate financial contribution to do so.

If you have time, maybe you could post back after you have made your call because the response you get from the NHS bursary people may help another MSEer in a similar situation.

Why? If it isn't paid, very few parents would kick their kids out so its nothing like being truly independent.
