Travel in USA July

Hello. My DS is travelling in USA in July - St. Louis Missouri on 13th-15th, Colunbus Ohio on 20th - 22nd, Buffalo NY on 26th-29th and Washington DC on 3rd-5th August.
He really would like to take the chance to travel by bus or train and maybe sight-see a little in between the weekends. Does anyone have any ideas about what to see, where to go, where to eat, where to stay please
