At the end of the day, if a birglar wants to burgle you he will give it a go.
All these fake deterrents, such as fake alarms, radioson, andlights etc don't really stop them
Very true, though a small minority get their comeuppance. Have a look at this;

hi OP we live in a vulnerable house to (dark alleyway running adjacent to the house, large plot of land behind, very dark, no street lights etc), we always had a burglar alarm but never actually wired it up, just to put people off really, until one night, our shed got broken into and most expensive stuff was stolen and the following night, my car was broken into, so since then we had our alarm wired up, we have working cctv cameras on the house (about £150 from ebay, get your OH to fit them himself), also we have 2 security lights and a cctv sign on every window...we havent had any problems since and this might seem extreme to some but i am a 28 year old woman left alone with a 2 year old whilst my husband goes out to work at night, so to me, its is necessary0

Two westies who snap and bear their teeth to strangers but who are lovely and friendly to family and friends. Molly Dog once kept the window cleaner hostage up his ladder as she escaped into the garden:eek::eek::eek:I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
If you are worried about being burgled whilst you are in the house at night, get a burglar alarm with the panic button in your bedroom.
And set the alarm! I dont understand why people pay for alarms and dont use them.
My friends mum didnt set hers, the guy managed to break in, whilst her husband was asleep on the couch! shut the small dog away in the kitchen, and stole the car keys, and nicked the car.
Same thing happened to my friend - they broke in - her DH was asleep on the couch from a night out - so basically drunk and completely knocked out, took the car keys and car.
So make sure you dont keep your car keys near the front door either.0 -

Hmm I think I would rather they found the car keys and did a U-turn in the hallway rather than them coming further in looking for something to nick if they'd got as far as getting inside the house tbh:eek:0 -

Like my labrador, she was so soppy, there was no chance of her ever attacking anyone. I'd assure friends that she would actually be very useful against burglars, as she was very adapt lying at all visitor's feet, eagerly waiting to be fussed. As a large black dog, in the dark, determinedly acting as a footmuff no matter where anyone moved, she'd have tripped up all burglars, no problem.
Yes geese WILL attack - my nieghbours geese attacked me regularly even though I was walking along the path OUTSIDE their home! I often got bruised and the neighbour only laughed when I complained to him! Bloody well hurts when the dam things bite you!
I had enough one day and walloped the lead goose around the head with my (closed) umbrella - and killed it! what a kerfuffle! I had a visit from the police (to whom I showed my bruises and told them I was on a public footpath) they declined to charge me - but the neighbour has hated me from that day!
I felt bad at killing it - but my kids were terrified of that dam thing and I was covered in bruises from it! My OH said it would have ended up as Xmas dinner if I hadnt killed it in the summer!
So I would say they are good watchdogs - but not much good as bodyguards!0 -
1.dont have a routine of going to bed at 8 turning all lights off at same time.
2.mail, when away have mail collected reguarly at different intervals.
3.if away let a neighbour use your driveway to put their car on! or a visitors car such as relative etc.
4.have a small cctv camera fitted that has infrared night vision, if someone chances their luck youll catch them place them where the are noticeable and covers entrance and exits and entrance points to the home.
6.window alarms, make a hell of a noise, cheap anough to by or the bobby scheme etc etc maybe able to supply them to you.
7.dont advertise belongings, any expensive pottery, vase, jewelry, small change in windows are targets for smash and grabs.
8.dont place car keys near front doors on corner tables a simple pole and hook and your pride and jopy is gone for a tommy mekenen special around town.
9. garages if you have a small starage unit in your garden chances are its an easy target, lock it with a propper lock not a suitcase one!!, many people advertise what they have in their garage when the doors are up anavoidable if you have large items such as gardening equipment hanging on walls but dont keep your tools and bourds in plain sight, cover any quads witha non see thorugh sheet and chain it to the wall with a chain wrapped round it and the padlocked to a hoop fastened tight to the wall. buy tint film to go over any window (doesnt have to be dark so no one can see out ot in any shade this will ensure if they throw a pebble through the window to shatter it it will hold the glass inplace and make it harder and longer for them push all the glass through stuck to the tint.
most savvy burglars scout before they do you over, target a house and watch it from a distance clock wich cars go back and forth what times and how often a day what times night you go to bed they scout your routine.0 -
You may wonder why I am posting in the middle of the night.
I can't sleep. I live on my own and came home last night to a burglary. Every single room is ransacked.
The police have been here. Forensics are coming tomorrow. I was told there was no chance of getting any of my property back.
3 years ago I came out of a long term relationship and have spent the time getting a place of my own and fixing it up myself. I don't have many valuables or even much furniture yet and I didn't have contents insurance cover.
I have some of the security measures that have been mentioned. The police advised I get an alarm.0 -
The only house burgled on this street is the one with an alarm.
You need to make sure your property doesnt stand out from the rest.
One thing to watch is they have been known to come back thinking your insurance
will have paid out and you now have lots of shiny new toys.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I'll be getting the TV licence cancelled tomorrow.
It won't be worth their while next time.0
