I agree with everyone else who has said about having a seperate main account from your overdraft account. That is what I do. Although slightly differently. I have my salary paid in to my overdraft account, which all my bills also come out of (just in case!), but then I transfer my monthly 'allowance' into my main account each month. Stops me using my overdraft when I should be using what I actually have available for the month. It's helped me take my OD from £2000 to £300 in about 18 months. Should have paid it off by now but Xmas / moving etc got in the way.

On the CV front - I've been told by a lot of recruiters that if you can demonstrate an ability to learn and to be adaptable, you are more likely to get picked up by employers. Also, never lie (very silly) and don't try and overcomplicate things. Have you tried signing up with recruitment companies? I have found that I always get better jobs when someone else is doing the work for me! And they will do your 'cover letter' in terms of the blurb they send the potential employers.

I'm really close to Swaggers payout for the first time - very excited! Though I seem to be having problems with the site at the moment. It was fine this morning, but seems to have stopped loading for me :-S I have a target of 70 SB today and so far I'm only on 20 - I need it back up and running!!!

Nothing for me to report on money making - got a couple more bids on Fleabay but nothing ends till next week and there's a lot more not selling than there is selling :(

Massive hugs to all who need them - seems we all have very low days :(

  • Thanks for all your lovely and helpful replies :)

My situation is proberly very different from most peoples, i dont have any income, my partner pays for all the bills and also gives me £50 per week to cover The household DDs that come out of my account.
He earns a decent wage, we dont get any benefits other than Child benefit.
I know your proberly thinking that sounds great and it is very generous, but its not.
He's very controlling with money, when i reduced the car insurances monthly payments, he reduced my weekly payment.
i dont get a shopping budget, he insists on coming to do the weekly shop so i dont pocket any spare change :o ect.

Unfortunately, he doesnt give me money for the kids bus fare from school, petrol or anything else such has clothes ect, so this has to come out the £50 that should be covering DDs.

I am grateful for him paying what he does, but also resent that he'll see me scratching about for pennies for bus fare and then he'll go and buy himself the lastest ps3 game, dvd, trainers ect.

He has NO debt, I paid his debts off when we first got together :o

I think he's worried that if i get back on my feet that i'll leave him, which i most likely will! and also thinks that i will gamble with any spare cash i get..I wont!

He's not the father of my 2 kids, but he has been here for the last 11 years since my oldest was 4.

So to sum the situation up moneywise, i have to make approx £100 per month out of thin air just to break even with the DDs, anything else goes towards the overdraft, which is why when something crops up it sets me back so much :(

When i worked for slimming world he would moan about looking after the kids for 4 hours on a monday night while i took my group, most often i would take them to my mums.

They are older now, youngest has just turned 13 which is how im more able to look for work, if needs be she's sensible enough to let herself in after school should i be working for a few hours.

Soooooooooo...Im still working on a plan to get rich quick :rotfl:
I should be asleep now but was just tossing and turning, Got another night shift tonight  I'll try and grab a hour once the kids get in :)

((moneyspider)) My DH is also controlling with money though not to the extent you have described. I have no income of my own. I cannot work as I have ME. I did work about 7 yrs ago in Sainsbury's but DH used to be late picking up children from child minder and she complained. On the one night a week when the children didn't go to the child minder he would arrive home at about 5.50pm when my shift started at 6pm. I could not get him to understand I needed time to get there (only 5 mins in car) to walk through the store to staff area, put things in locker and clock in. I get £80 per week housekeeping and have to buy food and toiletries for a family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers who have the same needs as adults. When DD2 goes to Uni my housekeeping will be reduced again. I used to complain about this but I realise it is all we can afford. DH salary has been reduced and our outgoings have gone up so I understand things are tight. My aim is to make extra money to fill some of the short fall. Doing Swagbucks, Superpoints , surveys etc is the only way I'm able to manage because of the ME. I have to fit doing these in with housework which in itself is a challenge for me. In other ways OH is very helpful. He, in a way is my carer and does quite a lot of the housework and taxi-ing the children around, but I like to do something. I do all the cooking, I try to do the ironing and occasionally manage the hoovering. I also take responsibility for changing the beds. Sorry am rambling now.

What I wanted to say is it is very hard when you have no income of your own and have to rely upon someone else to provide for you.

Moneyspider, thats terrible. Does he not care that your struggling or does he like to see you struggle, like a control thing 'She cant leave me, she's got no money'. I understand there might be a gambling aspect in his reasoning but surely limiting you to no money would push you closer to gambling? Have you had a heart to heart with him? Does he see your children as his, would he give them money/clothes ect if they wanted it or is it strictly 'whats mine is mine and whats yours is mine?' Do you get to keep your wages out of interest?

  • Durham_mim - I know what you mean about ME.

I had that 8 years ago but I was lucky in that I managed to progress back into being in full time work. It was a massive struggle though and I remember not even being able to pull myself out of bed each day :-S It is so debilitating and people do not understand how hard it can be, permanently moaning about you making a fuss for 'just being tired'! I have to be careful now about overdoing things, watching my diet and ensuring I exercise. You can't just forget about it and carry on, no matter what anyone says. You have all my sympathy - it's a rubbish thing to live with.

My OH and I keep our debts very seperate. I refuse to be involved with his, and will not allow him to be involved with mine. But we both work and both have very different views on money so I think it only right we deal with our own as we see fit. I cannot imagine having to rely on someone else to give me pin money - I know it's what my mum used to have to do though and she's always said it was really hard.

Even more massive (((((((((HUGS)))))))))) to you both.

  • No Nat he doesnt look at the kids as though they were his, he's not very interested in them tbh, he talks to them and will have a joke about but nothing like you would expect after 11 years of bringing em up. he doesnt give them spending money or anything like that.

My wages...who knows, ive not been paid yet. When i have earned cash from carboots ect in the past i learned quickly not to tell him the full amount i had earned, if he thinks ive got extra cash he becomes even more tight.

He doesn't really want me going out to work, it is a control thing :o

I have told him im working so i can clear my overdraft once and for all, so he knows thats my intention for all my wages, but time will tell if he tries to make it difficult.

God all this sounds so terrible reading it back :o

Durham : Thanks for sharing your story too, its so difficult, with my OH i could understand if he was struggling for cash, but he's not.

Just adding 83p profit from an ebay sale (woop woop) and £12 overpayment from a customer who moved house (actually, she paid me £18 over as a "thank you" but, as someone else seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth owing me £6, I've netted it off!). Also deducting £5 as I overcalculated the profit on a bingo account - so the net position is £7.83 to add.
