If worse comes to worse buy a 'dry shampoo' (you can get cans from savers for a quid each) and spray at your roots, massage into the scalp and brush through.
I use it cause i put vaseline on my scalp due to eczema so my roots are very greasy.

    Hi there

I was having a similar problem only it was at the crown, straight after washing it felt like I hadn't rinsed it properly :( but rinsing again didn't help but I used Vosene (original) one and it seems to have worked a treat, I don't know that I would like to use it all the time but certainly once a week or every other wash. Hope this helps

    Paula

I had exactly this problem - started very suddenly. I tried a number of different things and after about 4 weeks did a google search and found quite a bit of info. (apparently common in menopausal women - but in lots of young women too)

This will sound very odd, but what worked for me was to do a final rinse with Listerine. The forums I found on Google said original so no idea if the others work. It worked after about 2 washes and the problem hasn't come back.

Best of luck - it might sound a minor problem but I was so very conscious about my greasy streak! (especially as the rest of my hair was lovely and shiny)

I have this issue sometimes, no matter how long my hair is.

I just use head and shoulders once or twice and it seems to cut all the mank out of my hair.

if you are using the bath water to rinse off the shampoo then thats probably the cause. you are not rinsing your hair properly which is leaving it looking greasy. you need clean water to rinse with.

You say you give a final rinse of clean water but are you putting your hair back into the bath water after the initial wetting, I wouldn't put your hair into the bath water at all to rinse the shampoo or conditioner, just use jugs of clean water.

No, not bath water in the jug, fresh water from the tap into a jug - I rinse the suds out in the bath water (just because my hair's so long, I give it a good massage underwater to get the suds out of my scalp) and do the final rinses as the bath water is draining so the water level is too low for me to accidentally dip my hair back into.

Not that great with brown hair though, I tend to look a bit grey and ghostly! I know they do versions for brown hair but to be honest this is too expensive to use as a solution really.
Also rinse with cool water for the final rinse. This will calm your scalp rather than stimulate it.

Thanks, I've done a cold rinse for years now since reading that it's supposed to be good for you.

How do you actually wash your hair? I know you say you're using it on the roots but you shouldn't be focusing on the hair itself. The thing that helped me was "shampoo is for the scalp, conditioner is for the hair". You should view shampooing as like a scalp massage, this is the only area of your head that will be oily with regular washing. What I do is start with the back of my head, lathering up the shampoo a little before use then applying it directly to the scalp in the greasiest areas. Then I spread it out to the rest of the scalp. I wash it out, then do another quick scalp wash, then quickly run the shampoo through the rest of the hair. Wash it out then only apply conditioner to the roots.

I find it also helps to brush the back of my hair through a few times as it is drying if I leave it to dry naturally. If you're looking for a good SLS free shampoo to help with this I would recommend the Detox Deep Cleanse by Naked. http://www.nakedbodycare.co.uk/naked-detox-deep-cleanse-shampoo-all-hair-types.html

Thanks, I do more of a scalp massage, though with this 'greasy' buildup I've been piling up the rest of my hair onto the lathered up top to try to wash underneath properly too. I tried applying conditioner beforehand, with the idea that I'd wash the bulk of it out when shampooing to tackle any residue caused by conditioner, but it doesn't seem to make a difference which way around I do it. I've always made it a rule to brush it at least once, but usually several times, as it dries as without this step it can be twice as bad (though brushing doesn't cure it completely)
as a hairdresser (for a long time lol) its either a silicone build up as said above or your conditioner is simply to heavy and your not rinsing it out properly...i HATE pantene but their clarifying shampoo works a treat...i use it to remove all build up before i carry out a brazilian blowdry :) hth

I cut out conditioner for a month or two with no effect so not the conditioner. I think you were right about the silicone build up though - a couple of washes with adding a spoonful of bicarb to the Tresemme shampoo (which seems to be silicone-free from my look at the ingredients, though I'm no expert. Nothing ending with -icone, at least!) and the buildup is gone :T I even did the cardinal sin of falling asleep with it still damp, not even a cursory brush, expecting it to be in a real state and in need of the dry shampoo treatment the next morning, but it was perfectly soft and shiny!

I'm wondering if the culprit was some of the free samples of shampoo I've been getting from the freebies board, I will keep an eye on the ingredients a bit more closely and do the odd clarifying wash with the bicarb to keep on top of it :)
  • Try using T-Gel. The original one, not the variants.

    Works for me.

I'm getting this with a new conditioner I'm using, which is very silicone-y. Don't think the fact the shower pressure is a bit ropey helps either!

I actually have black hair, i use a cheap can of dry shampoo from savers, its a £1.29 a can.
I dont use 'normal' brands of shampoo due to build up, just after one wash in tresemme my hair looks like iv smeared cooking oil over it.
I use 'Naked' shampoo's, quite expensive and only in boots, about £4 a bottle but its the only thing that doesn't irritate my eczema!
