I want to scream

And if one more person tells me that I am stupid for booking my wedding so far in advance I think I may scream.
So got engaged at Christmas and we went and booked the church yesterday - getting married on 14.06.14 and we are going to our venue at the weekend to book that.
Yes its over 2 years away but why are people insisting on telling me that I shouldnt be booking things now?
The reason for not getting married till then is that we need to save and I want to get the big purchases out of the way by paying a little off every month.
I have been looking and trying on Wedding dresses - again the shops insist on telling me that I shouldnt be looking yet and that I am silly to even think about it.
I am a little giddy and excited now that the church is booked as it all has a feeling of being real.
So am I wrong to be booking things so far in advance?
No, in my opinion you are not being silly but rather sensible. You actually have a similar timeframe as us. We were engaged in Nov 2010 and booked the wedding for August 2013, for similar reasons to you. Firstly, I was studying for my PGCE at that point and so have never had a proper wage as I have gone straight from school to uni and then training. This year is my first wage packet, but we don't intend to put any purchases on credit cards...we want to pay for everything ourselves, so we needed to give ourselves a couple of years to save.
In addition, we were quite picky about venues and the one we really like was fully booked for all Saturdays in August in 2012, except the very last one which wouldn't have given us time to go on honeymoon before school, so this kind of cemented the wedding.
So it's alright saying a year is plenty but in depends what kind of venue etc you're after. Also, there is a 9 month wait on my wedding dress.....I wouldn't want to be rushing around those three months, feeling pressured to pick something quickly. Again I know you can get dresses much sooner than that but that's my personal choice.
The last thing that influenced my decision was the fact that I want to make all the stationary myself and with working a 50-60 hour week, I need at the months possible to squueze that in!:rotfl::cool:"More people would learn from their mistakes if they weren't so busy denying them." - Harold J. I DO understand why people book that far in advance but I couldn't do it, in addition to all of the reasons already mentioned I will add a few more....
If you cannot get insurance that far ahead and one of you loses your job and you cannot afford it you lose all deposits (unless the venue will allow you to push the date back)
What about the venue going into administration, something that has come up a few times in this forum
What if you fall pregnant?
What if in 12m time you suddenly hear loads of bad press about service or food at the venue, anything can happen in two years.
I think I am obviously too pessimistic
I know a very popular venue in the next town that can be booked up for 2016 already and that's insane. Surely you are also subject to price rises? Most contracts will state that they can further increase prices and will reserve the right to do so, what if they go up 20% and it's then out of budget?
PS, OP, I don't think you are crazy and if you were telling me this in real life there is no way I would be so rude as to tell you my thoughts and I think it is a little unfair of these people to do so!
At least you have your date and can plan accordingly, that's a big bonus

jtr2803 I can see your point, but the thing is any of those things can happen at any time. My wedding is September, and I could experience my venue going bust, a job loss, a pregnancy etc etc
Sometimes you just gotta go with it- take a risk and cross you fingers and hope to god it goes ok!!0 -

Yep, do get what you are saying but the shorter the period between booking and date the lower the odds if you know what I mean?
I have read way too many horror stories of those who had no insurance losing significant sums of money and I just wouldn't be handing over cash until I knew I had insurance in place, for the sake of £50 odd quid to me it's a no brainer

I wouldnt worry! We got engaged oct 2010 and are getting married in july. When we first announced the engagement we got a lot of 'Oh, 2012?' but i knew i wanted it in the summer and felt 2011 would be too rushed. I did wait until a year before chosing my dress but really only because thats when the holidays are. The dress shop will only be conserned because as styles are likely to change before then so to make sure you'll get it they'll have to buy it in and store it for longer than usual. Plus they'll be worried you'll change your mind and they are stuck with it.0

PREGNANT :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
god forbid - OH has had the snip
I totally get what everyone is saying, I will be taking insurance out so if anything happens I (hopefuly) will be covered for deposits etc.
I just dont want to be getting into debt for the wedding, OH is already having palpatations over the cost.
I am also a very stressful person so hopefully by having plenty of time to plan and sort I wont be too stressed out on the day.
At the end of the day I am getting the church of our choice and the venue of our choice on the day that we want - everything after that is a bonus

We are getting married May 2013 and had a devil of job getting a date agreed between registrars and reception venue, and that is a Friday booked 15 months in advance.
Registrars bookings being taken into 2015 already.
I'm now having a look at invites, colour scheme, dresses etc for ideas, but won't be buying in earnest until autumn i think unless i see something perfect beforehand. When you're chewing on life's gristle, don't grumble, give a whistle.

Must be on the same wave length. I bought tissues the other day. As well as alot of just in cases like sewing kits in case (my fried riped her dress at her wedding last year and couldnt find one) plaster, again, in case, paracetamol etc. Have ended up doing like Sammy Wheeler did and doing bags for folk, just to keep everything together! My OH thinks it's funny, then when he lets slip and someone says, "what a good idea" he's like, "yeh, I thought so too" bloody men!sugarwalsh wrote: »I bought tissues the other day and my OH wa laughing because I have 'thought of veverything'. As much as people who plan 3 years ahead are an enigma to me I am sure someone as relaxed as me is weird to the planners of this world!Married the lovely Mr P 28th April 2012. Sammy Wheeler?
I saw sewing kits in the pound shop the other day and considered it! I got makeup remover wipes in there and nail files (Rubbish) with the thought of making a 'rescue kit'. So, I need sewing kit and pain killers, anti hisamine (OH allergic to somethings and I am to tree pollen so if it rains I will have scratchy eyes!) Any other thoughts?
Also, I was thinking about this thread this morning and I had previously descibed myself as a 'planner' but really what I should hae said was I'm 'organised', not a planner!May GC - £100 per week
