Car valet jet wash taken paint off bumper

Bought a group on service voucher with express valet for a local garage. When I picked up the car there was a three inch by one inch gash where I presume the jet wash had taken paint off the car. The garage are accepting no responsibility for this saying as bumper had been sprayed it can't have been prepped properly beforehand. I had the bumper sprayed about five years ago and no probs until now. Garage wouldn't spray the whole bumper but would patch up the job which I felt had no other option to accept. Garage have done this and just more or less painted with a brush on the damaged part with any silver paint they had and this really does look a mess. I thought they would have at least sprayed the damaged bit. Manager saying that was all hey could offer. Is there anything I can do or where can I go for advice. Any help appreciated.

The paint on the repaired area has come off whereas the paint on an unrepaired section did not; that does strongly point to the repair not being good enough, and that isn't their fault. Anything they do to try and help is out of goodwill, you can't expect them to spend much on it.

If anyone is to blame, it's the person who did the last spray job, but after this length of time I'd doubt you would have much luck persuing that either.

Update: Garage offered to respray the whole bumper and will go halves with cost. So in effect I will be paying the garage another £100. Doesnt seem such a good offer really.

It doesn't seem to actually be their fault.

I would totally agree with this.
If the bumper had been correctly prepared and a good quality primer (if they used one) and top coat correctly applied, the paint would have bonded to the surface and shouldn't have lifted off even with a professional strength pressure washer.

As it was a few years ago that it was painted, there may have been a hairline crack in the paint which was allowing moisture, salt, dirt etc in, and this may have caused a bit of debonding of the paint.

All in all, I think that you have had a good result with the garage offering to cover 50% of the cost of a respray.

You shouldn't be able to wash the paint off, you won a prize getting them to split it with you.

Did you even read the post above this?

I suggest you do, as it might help you.

you dont need a jet wash to valet or wash a car
just proper propriety cleaners and someone who knows what they are doing
theres too much pressure and if pointed wrong would wreck a radiator too

he left it at his dads the other week when he went on holiday and his dad actually jet washed it and has faded the paint in areas not realising what he was doing! the lad went mad

It must have been a very poor quality paint or paint job for water or even water and detergent to fade it.
I would have thought that a 2 year old Alfa would have had very good paint and a laquer coat on top to protect it.

Jet washing car paint will not fade it.

Next time I drive at +++mph in the rain, will that fade my paint too?
