I need help regarding income tax and no p60's/p45's

Hello i'm a newbie so please bear with me..
I'm currently going through my finances and after looking through the forum i was eagerly reading articles in the tax rebate section.
I last had a rebate for about £550 in Sept 2006 (or there about). Since then i have had several job changes with one being promoted. I also started claiming child tax and working tax credits due too looking after a child which was not my own, they start university in sept.
I don't have much evidence to ensure i don't "owe" the taxman anything if not a few payslips and maybe a p60 from 2006/07
My main question is how can i get the evidence i need before i approach hmrc or would i not need to do this after a fairly lengthy wait for tax credits to start in 2010 (took nearly 4 months to sort).
I'm fairly knowledgeable regarding working out my tax allowances and how much i should have paid but with having so many changes i'm not sure it will be accurate.. and need too prove.
Sorry for waffling (hope i got my point across)
cheers guys

You don't necessarily need evidence, give HMRC a call explain you think you are entilted to a rebate and quote the Years and they should be able to tell you. If they have missing records thats when you will have a problem. You could always contact your ex employers and request a statement of earnings.0
