And you can't really 'spam' a site that doesn't sell anything. If I werre to go on that site and post a link to MSE would that be spamming?
As far as MSE is concerned posting the same information more than once is considered spamming.
    What's spam?
Forum users mustn't post the same forum post more than once on the forum (the only exception is members of the MSE Team; when needed). It's called spamming and most internet forums forbid it.

So it is probably not spam under MSE rules. But depending on who posted the link it could be considered advertising which is also banned.
MoneySavingExpert.com is a free site - you cannot pay to buy space - one of the reasons why so many people use it! Equally you are not allowed to advertise any goods, services and/or companies anywhere on the forum, or through private messages (PMs), no matter how honourable the intention.

'Advertising' includes touting for business; asking people to contact you; posting e-mail addresses which indicate a web address; linking to sites or blogs you or friends are involved in (whether you’re selling something or not), or to your eBay or other auction sales.

All posts which we consider to be advertising will be removed where reported.

Users are allowed links in profile pages but please don't mention them in your posts or signature in any way.

If you continue to advertise on the forum, your permission to post on the forum will also be removed pending investigation and authorisation but only if appropriate. This includes the Referrers Board.
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place

If I go online and buy a £18 advance ticket from London to Bristol that's what I'll pay for it

If I go to Paddington (or my local station) and ask for that ticket - that's what I'll pay for it. £18...........

    You have missed the point:
you can never get any cashback when buying direct at the station!

Where is the any "drivel" in that?

    This is a moneysaving website!

You will never get any cashback etc at the station! But currently you can get cashback/loyalty points etc by buying online! Which was the post you are so rudely calling drivel (from the safety of your keyboard, though!)

This particular thread is (or perhaps was) not about cashback - it's about discount fares, an entirely different thing

The post I took objection to was one where someone switched topic without warning. If I've missed the point it's because of that veering off course.

The real objectionable aspect of this thread is you referring to another post (regarding saving money!) like this:

I'm always up for a bit of banter about the ticket prices/names/conditions, but only in conjunction with accurate advice. Not that you often see accurate advice on railway ticketing matters on MSE ;)

    WUM posting.

(This couldn't be some form of spam for another railway jobsworths' forum?)

And there's always one that takes the bait.
