This is MSE...turn up in good time, make sure your hand luggage complies with the carrier. Dont pay for high speed security. Whats that all about? An admission that standard security is carp? Pack a wholesome butty box of your favourite treats and have them in flight. With the money saved, buy a small bottle of your favourite tipple :)
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

We then had two and a half hours sat in terminal 2, getting increasingly angry at the people getting drunk at 7am "because they are on holiday"

airports bring out the snob in me!

Yes I've seen the same at East Midlands at 6am. Fortunately they were all going to Amsterdam and we were off to Paris with a much more civilised crowd! Still, I like to be at the airport with plenty of time - I can't relax until I've made it through to the departure lounge (although one trip I spent 36 hours at airports, but that's another story...)

I was going to suggest the airport lounge, then you can get there up to 3 hrs before and take your time and relax, includes comfy seats, snacks, drinks, wifi, newspapers etc normally about £16.

Check in rather than security tends to be the rate-limiting step.

I check in online beforehand and then turn up at the airport an hour before scheduled departure. If you want to eat too, I'd maybe add an extra 30 minutes...?

Tends to be terminal 2 though, which is quieter.

Quick update: It took less than 15 minutes to do check in and get through security. GlenntheBaker was spot on with a departure from gate 23.
