Seller sent to wrong address, then gave out my details?!

Hi there
I recently purchased an item from an ebay seller for the sum of around £40 - probably just over 2 weeks ago.

It still hadn't arrived and so I had contacted him to chase it up. Today he got back to me apologising as he has sent the item to the wrong address... A genuine mistake obviously.

However what concerns me is the fact he has told me he has asked the person he sent this onto to forward it onto my address... and has therefore effectively given a stranger my name and address.

It is a genuine mistake and I wasn't too bothered but for some reason feel a bit uneasy... What would your opinion be?

Like you, I would have preferred for the other buyer to return the item to the seller then have it sent out to me - even if it meant waiting as I can accept mistakes do happen.

The seller is also a stranger but at least you have had a dealing with him. I think he should have asked for your permission first before giving your personal details out.

  • Yeh I am questioning whether I am maybe over-reacting as obviously the seller is a stranger too I guess, but obviously I have been involved in a transaction with them... The mistake of sending it to someone else wasnt too much of a biggy I guess and it was genuine so I am happy to ignore that, and I guess he has maybe asked it to be sent on directly to speed things up.

Just curious to how others would feel.

  • As a seller I would ask the item to be returned to me so I can have control over the situation. As a buyer I wouldn't be concerned about one person having it for a legitimate reason.

I would expect a seller to offer the choice to you

He will have asked the other buyer to forward the item to you to speed things up and so he is not paying two postage costs but you should have been asked if this was ok with you.

As a seller I would have preferred to arrange a courier collection to have the item sent back to me first so I know it had definitely been sent on to you and in good time.

By the sounds of it, that was what he was trying to do. He only told the buyer what had happened after the buyer chased it up because s/he hadn't rcvd it after two weeks.
