Christmas flights and car hire - Canada

We're going back to Vancouver at Christmas :j , hiring a car and driving down to Portland to stay with s-i-l, driving back to Vancouver and then flying home. Would it be cheaper to hire a car in Vancouver or arrange it over here? Also anyone know when Air Transat get their Christmas flights up? BA and Air Canada are so bloody expensive. We're flying on 14/15 Dec and coming back 04/05 Jan. Have tried Canadian Affair but can't get a price yet so anyone know when they get their flights up?
