PPI help MBNA few questions please

I have had no dealings with ppi but a family member asked for my help, so I naturally started to read this forum
They have per existing illness and didn't realise they had ppi as they knew it would be useless as wouldn't cover them, this was from 2001 but the account is still active and ppi was cancelled in 2006 when they became ill and ended up on an arrangement to pay due to not being able to keep up repayments
The claim questionnaire asks how would they have paid the minimums if they had no ppi- do I simply say they wouldn't have afforded it , I fact couldn't afford it hence the arrangement?
The MBNA advisor said unless they had alternative way to pay the claim would be unsuccessful?
Another thing, can they even claim the ppi back so late on? Account started 2001 went into arrears 2005/6 ppi was cancelled at this time.
If the account is still running but ppi stopped (potentially) more than 6 years ago do they still have a valid claim?
TIA
