A win....Or maybe not

Match magazine rang me on friday afternoon and told me I had won a family ticket to England Vs Holland on wednesday at Wembley. Wow I was soooo excited and told my children we were going, they couldn't wait and told all their friends. But at about midday today I recieved this email:-

I hope this email finds you well and having had a lovely weekend.
I’m afraid my head has been somewhat all over the place this last week; I have a very sick Grandmother in hospital in Sunderland, and clearly have not been thinking quite clearly.
I am so sorry, we only have one pair of tickets to give away for the England v Holland competition that I called you up about on Friday – I somehow got confused with other current competitions that we’re running offering tickets to matches. You were the second name we drew, and according to our ethical rules, I must honour the first drawn winner with the prize.
I hope you can accept my most sincere apologies.

I am so upset :(, I have been crying about it , how on earth am I going to tell my darling children?

Sorry to share my bad news with you all but I really am so upset about doing this to my children I couldn't keep it to myself.

Good luck to you all :)

omg! that's awful, I'd have emailed straight back saying that I was sorry to hear he was having personal difficulties but you were told you had won and had told your children who were now very upset, I'd also email the magazines editor attatching the email you just received, that's shocking!, whild I can sympathise with his personal life he should keep it seperate from his work. Sure someone else will have a different take on this but I like you would be really upset especially at thought of upsetting kids. Really hope you get something for the mix up :)

I agree with Geezawem, I think a phone call to let them know your disappointment and anger might !!!!! their conscience. At the very least it might make you feel better at being able to vent your anger. They should at least send some kind of goodies pack as a form of apology.

Ask them what they intend to do about the rail tickets you booked and the new England shirts you bought your kids.

Oh noooo. I literally had a very similar thing happen with a magazine, saying i was the second winner drawn, so they took away my £1000 prize. I didn't get the prize as the company were lame and horrid and to let you know the IMP and ASA can't do anything in a situation like this as they have given a prize out, and they put it down to human error. its just one of those things. try to see if they can give you a compensation prize? i have a feeling you won't be at wembley as its sold out, but perhaps tickets to a future event wouldn't go a miss? x

I find this all very strange for two reasons

    1. They used a different form of contact to tell you that you in fact did not win. Yes I agree why did they not call you back
    2. The person who email you whilst I sympathise what has happen it is NOT a professional way of telling you the reason. I do not expect a company to tell why they got it wrong if it was for personal reasons. They are not your friend but a company.

I would see if I could find an alternative contact and see what they say. If they had any kudos they would offer an alternative prize as this was not your fault but their's

    That's horrible news.

I've sent a brief email to the FA through their contact form to see if they can do anything, pretty sure they'd be interested in some positive press coverage if they did anything to help you out

To be fair to the person who sent the email, the competition was originally for just 2 tickets. Still, it does suck that she told you the wrong prize.

"One winner get two tickets for the friendly match at Wembley, 29th Feb 8pm".
    Thank you all who post.
