  • Are you sure you have to do Access to higher education course and GCSE's? I thought these were part and parcel of an Access course.

A relative of mine is also going to Leeds Uni in Sept to do Sports Science degree. He has spent the past year doing an Access to Health course at the local college. Involved was English & Maths along with several other science subjects. He is being accepted into Uni on the basis of passing this access course alone.

Do check, and check again. I have spent the past 4 mos enrolling my daughters into college. Almost without fail they contradicted themselves about entry requirements, etc. and if I hadn't looked things up myself they would not be in the college.

Good luck with the midwifery course. I have a friend who is a midwife and a few who are doulas. Rewarding and challenging work.:A
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

    From the Leeds University website.

    Entry Requirements
5 GCSE’s grade C or above to include English Language, Maths and Science
PLUS EITHER 3 A levels at grade BBB (which must include Biology)
OR a QCF BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (equivalent to old BTEC National Diploma) at Distinction/Distinction/Distinction
OR an Access to Higher Education Course in Nursing Pathway or Health Sciences with a minimum of 45 level 3 credits passed at distinction.

As I said earlier, this is quite common - not all Access courses have Maths and English as part of them because many students already have these.
  • It is always worth talking to the admissions tutor for this course though. Explain your circumstances and ask them what they will be happy with as entry qualifications for you (personally). Don't rely on the website, this is just for information and mostly relates to 18-20 year olds. You have different things to offer and they can, and often are flexible, depending on circumstances.
There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.
  • I 2nd dizzyrascal's advice. I've just been through a series of careers advice seesions with a Next Step adviser. I did O'levels equivilents and a few certificates in a completely different country with a completely different system years ago. In talking about the possibiity of going to Uni the adviser wanted me to call up and see if I even needed to do an access course let alone GCSE's - she seemed to think it was possible I get in on the basis of an interview! Don't forget you are a mature student (toss that term around!) and you have ample life experience and have already proven yourself with huge responsibilities (running a household with 6 kiddos). Like dizzyrascal said the prospectus is written for 18 year olds. One of my home educated daughters never finished her GCSE's due to an ongoing illness. She's 20 next month and when applying to college we were originally led to believe she would have to do GCSE's alongside her chosen course. She took some skills tests and had a few interviews. In the end they moved her straight onto a 2 year level 3 course equvilent to 5 a'levels skipping over levels 1 and 2 entirely. If DD and I had just gone by what the prospectus listed as entry requirements I think it would have taken her down a very different road.
