Hi e1,
I'm 30 years old and a mum of 6. i'm just enquiring really to see if anyone can point me in the right direction.
I'm looking at completing a distance learning access to higher education course to give me the entry requirements to go to university. I'm also having to redo my gcse maths and english due to only gaining a grade d in those subjects
The access course is just under £1000 and i was wondering if there is any sort of grant available towards it? I'm going to complete the course with or without the financial assistance but the moneysaver in me just wants to check if there are any.
Thanks in advance
Also advice on getting my gcse maths and english would be appreciated xx

If you are doing the access to higher education course you shouldn't need to do your GCSE maths and English as this will give you an C grade equivalent qualification.
I did the access to higher education course two years ago at our local college, because I hadn't taken a level III qualification (i.e. GNVQ, NVQ, A-levels) in the past I was entitled to have full fees paid. This policy may have changed but is worth looking into.0 -
^^ agree, contact your local FE College as you may be able to get the course at little or no fee.0

Thank you for your replies.
I've contacted Leeds university and they require me to do the full GCSE in maths and english so looks like evening classes at college is the only option. Unfortunately they won't accept GCSE equivelant qualifications.
The access course i'm doing is a distsance learning course and the company that provide the course are not governmewnt funded so therefore don't offer any financial support. I'm trying to find out where to look for a list of places that offer student grants/loans etc.
Annie thanks for your post. Deffinately not a wonder woman more of a gluten for punishment but love it!!
Maybe once i become a midwife i'll loose the urge to have more babies of my own! but i doubt it! xx0 -
Depending on the qualification, your local FE College may be able to help you more than the Uni can. Contact the Student Services team and ask. You could also contact Next Step who offer free careers & training advice.0

Do you require Maths & English because you want to teach after your degree? There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.0

My plan is to do this access to midwifery distance learning course along with the gcse maths and english. These will give me the entry requirements to get into leeds uni on a midwifery course. Leeds uni will only accept full gcse's not equivalents.
I'm not planning on doing teaching.
Thanks for the advice regarding next step i'm going to have a look now.

Many courses will want you to have a full GCSE grade C in English and maths as well as Access.0

You have a long road ahead of you. Sub-GCSE to BSc Midwifery - wow.
And six kids (no credit transfer for birth-experience....); have you stopped now? (Please say yes.)

My local FE college does an online version of both English and Maths. Each costs about £250 but you may get some funding towards that. (Ask your local FE, they usually know the most recent funding rules)There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.0
