If they downgrade the plate that reduces what you can carry. If you are found with it more than the new plated weight you will be fined for overloading which can be £1000+ and VOSA DO pull over cars towing trailers and put them over a weighbridge.
Yes i know that as I've previously said. I was just saying, why would I need A powerful vehicle to tow 800 kgs?0 -

You don't. But you at least want one capable of doing 50MPH into a headwind and able to get up a hill. 800kg for a lot of cars is over 80% of their weight.
I wouldn't like to tow 800kg with a 1L car.0 -
Close enough for a car like a corsa.
750kg max tow weight, kerb weight 940, gross weight about 1440, that gives a payload of 500kg in the car alone. So a fully laden trailer is only 250kg heavier than driving the car normally, fully loaded.
I used to pull a 500kg unbraked trailer with one, you wouldn't even know it was there.0 -
Just to make life even more complicated, the kerb weight can be different to the unladen weight. The definition of the kerb weight will be in the vehicle handbook, but often includes 75Kg for the driver.
Yeah, sorry, I still think in old money where we had kerb weights and max laden weights rather than maximum all-up masses (Guess the difference between weight and mass might be important if you want to drive somewhere with different gravity)

Which is why I suggested a small 4wd.......0 -
Trailer is 1300kg max laden weight?
I presume you dont have the car or the trailer at present?
So the big question is what are you planning on towing? Its OK having a trailer downplated but that
may leave you with too little carrying capacity.
Unbraked it must be less than 50% of the cars kerbweight upto a max of 750kg. Anything bigger
must be braked.
So what are you towing and why a 4x4? Is that a want or a need? Is it for hire and reward or personal use only?
I know its an issue not so long ago towing trailers to events where you can compete or win a prize was said to be for reward.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
