Old Laptop help

Hi , One of my pals has been given an old laptop that a friend of his fathers got from work as they were going to bin them. It has windows XP professional on it. Unfortunately, it is password protected so he can't get in to use it and its very unlikely he would be able to find out the password. I tried putting in a Vista boot-up disc to see if it we could get it going that way, but it then comes up looking for an admistrator password. Is there some other way of getting in to the laptop so that we can make it useable or should we just give up and bin it ? Thansk

hiren's bootcd, and use the password editor on the menu to remove all old passwords....easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy ;)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

    Have a look here...

    http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

Fairly easy to make the disc as it is in ISO format and once you boot from it, in most cases, you just press Enter to select the default options. All the instructions are on-screen anyway.

Or, it does depend on the type of password, some are easier to swerve. Before burning disks try 'safe mode' (constant tap on F8 at boot) choose Administrator account. Possibly no password required, then 'Control panel'> Users, select the named account and alter it to 'no password'.

    I regularly use Ophcrack
    Move along, nothing to see.

good point spud, but being an ex-works one, I'd put money on there being an Administrator password set as well :( hence hiren's and offline password editor.

So would I, but worth a try for the sake of a couple of minutes.

I do keep a copy of UBCD handy, but don't find it as useful or user-friendly as hiren's.....and it seems to take an age to load up :(
