I operate under a assumption that goods I purchase won't be refundable unless I see literature elsewhere in the shop or on the receipt.

True, but they aren't allowed to mislead either. If they do mention that they allow returns but then fail to give the conditions for accepting returns or at least point the customer in the direction of the mat showing this info, I would say that they are on dodgy ground, especially if the salesman specifically said that a return or exchange would be permitted.

Many people who heard "exchange or return" would assume that this meant a return and refund, otherwise why would they also have said that they could also return and exchange?
