I applied for a Clarity last summer and was declined. I closed 2 or 3 credit cards accounts I dont use any more and updated my address on all my accounts, waited 6 months and now I have been approved. There will be a reason why they declined you. Look up your credit rating on noddle.co.uk

You say you have access to "significant credit", that could be the reason why they declined you, too much available credit already. The fact that you consider yourself as well off is irrelevant. And in addition, Halifax's credit scoring weighs very heavily in favour of the applicants who already have a relationship with the bank, so you are more likely to be declined if you dont already hold Halifax accounts
Debt free and staying that way!

I NEVER stated that I considered myself well off, that was an assumption made by seriousDFW who responded earlier.

Maybe it's an age thing? I mean, 38 years on the ER makes you at least 56...maybe older?

Doubt it, I am older than 56 and was accepted for a Hailifax Clarity reward card with the lowest interest rate without any problems and I already had a Halifax Card which like the Clarity card has always been paid off in full every month.

I assume the reason being I have banked with the Halifax for many years and have several accounts with them which have always been in credit.

Companies dont "credit check" you, so much as they profitability check you.

Mobile Phones are my favourite example.
Its better for Three to sell a phone on a £40 a month contract, rather than the same phone on a £15 a month contract.

Three arent hugely interest in payment history, although it matters, but they are very interested in phone usage.
I struggle to get a decent phone, because I dont use it frequently.
Giving me a blackberry for £15 a month isnt very profitable.
Giving it my partner, who has poor credit history, but a £30 a month contract is profitable very profitable.

Maybe, with the card you applied for, Halifax were using it as a "foot in the door" to sell iPad insurance.
Since you dont meet the criteria of person who wants iPad insurance, you failed the "credit" check.

    Dont take it personaly

This poster wasn't saying that you had said that you considered yourself well-off. They were stating, as I read it, that whether you are or not is irrelvant.

Again, let me reiterate that I did not assume you were well off. I was stating that you were better off than me, as you have an asset (house) and no debts, so 'technically', you are wealther than I, who have no assets and I do have debts, and I had been accepted for Clarity.

It does seem that Halifax like to nurture existing relationships - I have been a credit card customer of theirs since 2007. What everyone is saying is that there are MANY factors lenders use to decide whether to accept a customer or not, and many factors borrowers see as positive, don't fit the profile they are looking for.

Proud to have dealt with my debts.

While it's a few years since I sat face to face with applicants for a Halifax credit card, and doubtless things have changed since then, new to bank credit card applicants were far more likely to be declined than somebody who had a banking, saving or mortgage relationship with them.

It is peculiar - I was turned down for the "Reward Clarity" myself too last month. Despite the fact the month before I was getting offers for a 'guaranteed credit card' with them.

Yeah but not a guaranteed Clarity credit card. They wanted you on their basic one. I was getting the same offer back in the summer.
